While having an Android phone act as a full blown extender is interesting... What about having it act as a remote on steroid, to consult the lists of upcoming recordings, recorded shows, programs on a channel, etc. With the possibility of creating recording jobs and controlling some client/extender, would there be a demand for that?

doesn't the current mobile web server do all of this? Are there things that it doesn't do that you think are needed?

The reviews all still state the droid is pretty sluggish though, particularity in terms of it's main menu. Plus apps like Skype are still in Beta. I'm going to wait another generation before I dive into the smartphones.

The N900 has a fully fledged customizable remote application, you can program it with the USB-UIRT. It's available now. It's not a web service or anything that advanced though.

Probably not... but i can see the appeal of having a native application as well, but the mobile web app will get the job until there is a native app

Funny, because i've read alot of the same reviews... but recently I had an apportunity to play with a HTC Hero, and I was blown away. Based on the reports, it's "sluggish", but to use it, it felt pretty good. The droid is even better hardware than the Hero, so I would think that it should perform even better. Now, because the Android OS can run apps in the background, then as you run more apps, it will slow down (but I'm not quite sure that's a surprise to many of us).

The web server does do all the items that were listed. (review upcoming recordings, view/search EPG, create recordings, control client/extender)

Not at all, I have my droid sitting right next to me and slow or sluggish is never a term that comes to mind when using it at all. It is the first phone to be running android 2.0 on top of all the new hardware so some bugs are definitely to be expected.

Then again, can't the same thing be said about the video viewing part?

I agree my Droid is great, the most lag I see is similiar to an Itouch where there could be a keyboard lag....but very minimal...No regrets with my Droid.

I have the Droid and this is easily my favorite toy already. It has the same wow factor as Sage when I first got it installed. I do not have iPhone envy anymore.

Same here..had the Droid about a week and I am just flat-out impressed with it. I grin from ear to ear when I use it. It's extremely snappy and fluid. I'd love to see some type of remote control app for Sage....even if it's just for administering Sage.

Lots of Droid users here already!

Honestly, the first thing I wondered when I got it was "I wonder how long till I get placeshifter on it?"

If you all haven't grabbed the "Locale" app yet, do it. Fantastic functionality to automatically change settings on the phone based on pre-defined conditions. I have it set to for the following:
* Turn off the ringer and vibrate if I'm at home and somebody calls between 11:00pm and 7:00am.
* Turn off ringer and set to vibrate when I'm at work, during normal business hours
* Change default ringtone to "Lost in the Supermarket" by The Clash whenever I'm in the local Costco.

It also lets you trigger based on battery %, so you can have it do things like turn off WiFi and dim the screen to save juice. Awesome app.

I would LOVE a sageTV placeshifter for the Droid - that would be awesome. And I am loving this phone, too!

I can't resist commenting that the Motorola Droid is finally tempting me to use something beyond a basic phone.

The satellite and street level views for navigation were quite interesting.

One thing I've been trying to figure out is whether there is a way to sync calendars if my Wife and I both had one.

I can't verify for certain... but this appears to be the case for a friend of mine. He and his wife are using a google shared calendar, and it appears to sync with his phone.

I hope you get an android phone... maybe you can flex your sagetv muscle to have a native client built, in house

Sync to a Google calendar or an Outlook calendar (thru Google calendar) on your Droid.

Sync Motorola Droid Calendar (Gmail) with Outlook Calendar
