SageMCTuner - use a cablecard in Sage!

Can't believe I haven't seen any thread about this. I must be missing something.

Record shows using CableCard on Sage? Wow. Groundbreaking.

I was surprised as well - had intended to write a post up earlier, but life distractions have been constant. Anyway I think the word is out now so no excuses for those of you who can help test this.

Andy needs some testers who have:
  • CableCard Tuner with updated, "relaxed" firmware
  • SageTV (of course)
  • Windows Media Center (Vista or Windows 7 versions)

This is fantastic news, now if those darn CC tuners weren't so expensive.

I agree that this is very good news. However, if you run SageTV in a client/server environment this could be problematic. Especially if you use WHS. I'd rather not use Vista or W7 as a server. I just don't see the reliability being there.

Although I don't have cable, this is a wonderful thing.

The openness of SageTV and the super skills of the addon developers that have embraced SageTV reconfirm my belief that every dollar I've spent on my SageTV system has been well spent.

Don't think so since Windows XP can't handle CableCard. You'd need Vista with MC or W7 with MC installed on the SageTV server

Actually you have to have W7 for the no oem requirement without a hack.

How is this going to work-around the DRM? Don't you need something like Playready to access these wtv files?

Dang. I have no idea how my other hardware will work with W7. I also use Windows 2003 Server because I need a "Server" for other things like DHCP, DNS, etc. Win2003 is also the most "XP-like" regarding drivers.

So that being said, does anyone know if Sage, Media Center and this plugin work on Windows 2008 Server? Does it qualify?

Windows 7 is required as the PC that will house the Cablecard hardware and runs Windows Media Center 7. That is the only OS that natively supports the new "relaxed standards" for the Cablecard tuners. So without Windows Media Center I don't see how Server 2008 figures into this. The Windows 7 Media Center PC with the cablecard tuner would also need SageMCTuner service installed on it to make the tuner be seen as the network encoder. WMC 7 does all the actual recording so you need a functioning WMC 7 with an EPG AFAIK. (So it knows and understands and can tune channels)

Wow, this is the best news I've heard all day. Wasn't there a post on here somewhere about a 4 cablecard PCI tuner?

SageMCTuner uses the MC API to ask it to record on a specific channel so the tuner will need to be setup in MC with channels, etc. for it to work.

Hmmm...

I wonder what the smallest headless W7 box I could build would be?

you could probably run it off a nettop (or similar) w/ a 945G IGP, or maybe even virtualize w/ a USB DCT

SageMCTuner deletes the WTV/DVR-MS files when it's done so you wouldn't even need that much space.

How do you deal with a DRM error if the program info says copy once instead of copy freely? Presumably you could disable the channel in the tuner setup, but that's not on a program by program basis.

Hopefully the promise of the next version of WHS including some sort of WMC comonent will come true and I can just run it on the same box.
