Intel SS4200-E NAS

Only found three threads concerning this NAS box. What I'd like to do is, since I can't set up WHS cause QAM incombatability w/my tuner cards, set up a NAS and use my PC to run SageTV service only. Mayabe, once in a while, what a little TV when surfing the web or soing homework. I do game from time to time. I only have 1 HD200.

Newegg has a great deal on the SS4200-E ($169 promo deal this week). I will be upgradding to Win7 Pro 32-bit upon release. 780G mobo with Phenom II X3 720, 2 GB ram.

This would reduce 1 PC and have the spare parts to buiild a client later if I choose and haveing this nas set up in raid 5 eases my mind to centralize files and back ups.

Would gaming tax this set up to affect the Sage service?

I got rid of my Sage server months ago and have been running the service on my PC while using an extender. I have never had any problems with recordings while gaming or gaming while recording. I even used Show Analyzer for a while without issues (just have to set it up not to use a ton of CPU). I also got rid of the NasLite server a while ago too. I put 3x1.5TB drives in my PC on a Dell Perc5/i.

I wouldn't go back. It is a LOT cheaper to not have a dedicated server for everything. You don't have the extra noise/heat/electricity usage. I also have WHS in a virtual machine to do backups of the 2 family PCs.

It is a little riskier to do server type roles on your PC since it is easier to do bad things on it, but as long as you have a good backup/restore strategy it shouldn't be an issue.

My PC is an E8400, 8GB, Win 7 x64. A tri/quad core might be a little faster but honestly I didn't notice anything running slower after I started running this stuff on my PC other than startup/shutdown times are a little longer. The PC runs 24/7 so it really isn't an issue.

I'm guessing that if I just upgradded to a 790GX board and use the onboard controller, it wouldn't pass muster? I've had good luck w/Foxconn boards and from what I read, onboard raid seems to be working OK. Either way I go, I'm going to have to upgrade my board cause I'm out of PCI-e on the current.

I think my last post came off a bit wrong. Reading it again it kinds of sounds like I'm making an argument to run everything on one PC, which for most people it is overly complicated. I was just trying to say you can run Sage on regularly used PC without any problems. Then I started rambling on about how I have stuff set up lol

From your OP it sounded like you wanted WHS for files/backup. If that is the case maybe you should get WHS for your server and run Sage on your PC. Then you can use the drive pooling and not worry about raid.

Your current server in your sig could run WHS no problem. I would probably put 2gb in it though, then use the 4gb for your new PC. Only thing it would cost you is the price of WHS.

Thanks. I've been floundering all day about what direction I want to go. Either way, I may have to get a new mobo for the extra PCI-e slots. Both my gaming rig and Sage rig use the same mobo. I'm in no rush but have a severe itch. I do get nervous the more movies I acquire and losing a drive cause I have no backup plan set up (tisk...tisk on me). Then again, I do have the DVD's in the closet. Just the pain of having to re-rip a 1TB drive.

I should just bite the bullet and buy the two 2250's and WHS and put my duets and leftover parts on ebay.
