NAS or DAS

Looking to add a RAID box for external storage!

For the life of me I can't decide on a NAS or USB-DAS. The enclosure could attach directly to the SageTV server. Or attach to a Sage client box.

OTOH a NAS could be installed anywhere on the network.

Other than the ability to access the NAS form anywhere, I'm not sure there are other advantages.

I also just ordered an HD200 which I understand an external USB disk array could be plugged into and accessed by the server.

Any input provided would be appreciated.

Thanks

If possible, I would really go DAS via eSATA.

With that said, any should be fine, but be careful when it comes to NAS devices. Not all are created equal. You really need to do research into what is the maximum thoroughput of the device. Many have had problems streaming a couple of HD streams from them as they were just not up to the task.

Just my .02 worth.

NAS or direct/local storage via SATA. USB should not be an option unless you enjoy pain.

USB drives can be problematic, especially if you plan on streaming to them while recording. They require a lot of resources. For playback of existing files, you are probably fine unless you plan on recording at the same time.

Been researching DAS 2-4 Drive RAID boxes.

Any recommendations?? Any experience with the Buffalo Tech or Sans Digital boxes??

Thanks
