MVP unable to play network files??
I am not sure what I am doing wrong. When I try to use the MVP to try and play network files, it errors out and tells me the file is not found. I go to:
Media Center \ Browse Media Files \ Browse the SageTV server's Network\ and then to where the files are at. When I try to play the files I get Error -2 saying the files are no longer on the disk. When it shows the file location the slashes are / instead of \ (like smb:// instead of smb:\\). I don't know if that makes a difference of not. When I start up a client on a different pc and connect to the SageTV server and try to browse the network, the files play just fine. I have tried the same exact files with the pc client and the mvp and the mvp says the file is no longer there and the client plays the file just fine. Also the client menu is slightly different. It says "Browse the local Network" instead of "Browse the SageTV server's Network". Don't know if that makes a difference or not. I am using 6.6.2 on the server and the client. |

The MVP (and other extenders, for that matter) are all run in the context of the SageTV Server (specifically, the SageTVService). Because of this, it does not, if running as LocalSystem (which is the default) have authentication to network resources. To access network shares from the service (and therefore, from the extenders) the service itself needs to be logged in as a user with the requisite permissions. To do this, use the SageTVServiceControl.exe app and at the bottom is the option to assign a user account to the service.

Thanks!
Having the service log in as a user fixed the problem with the MVP's. But I still wonder why their client program can log into the SageTV server and play all the files it wants but the MVP can't. The MVP can browse the network and see the directories but just can't play the files while the service is in Local mode.

The PC client doesn't use the SageTV service process to access the network, it uses its own process running under the currently logged in user account to access the network.
