Is there a way to record on the fly?

Hey guys, new to the forum and to SageTV. Excellent software, however I can't seem to get it to record the way I need it to.

When watching LiveTV, I would like to start/stop recording on the fly. I know there's no way to stop SageTV from constantly recording, but is there a way to record specific segments that I need? For instance I may need to record for 10 minutes, stop for two, then record another 10 minutes. I would like to have those two recordings as separate files that I can immediately rename and move on to the next recording.

Is there any way to do this? Any and all help would be much appreciated!

No, You're not going to be able to do this. sage records based on the show, so you can only choose whether to record a show or not. What you CAN do is record the whole show, and then later split it down.

I don't mean to be argumentative, but you don't actually need to be able to stop and start recording like that. You just need to be able to conveniently mark the time codes of the clips you want to save, so that they can be easily extracted from the whole recording later. I believe there's a video editing plugin that does something like this, but I haven't used it myself. Check the Downloads area of the forum.

The problem with my setup is there are no shows. I'm using a Hauppauge HDPVR to capture footage from a PS3 and XBOX 360.

If I could record an entire 2-3 hour segment, but set marks every few minutes, then use another program to bounce each segment separately that would work.

Thanks for the help guys, going to try to find a solution to this.

I'd recommend checking out VideoRedo, IRC, they have a beta version that supports cutting h.264 recordings. That way you could record the whole thing using Sage and then then cut it down after the fact.

Edit: Just checked, they say HD-PVR (h.264) editing should be out by the end of Oct. That's going to be you're best bet.

Thanks guys!

Is it possible for me to set custom lengths for shows, this way I can either set it to 10 minute segments, or 4 hour segments to split later?

Also, what if I were to choose "cancel this recording" whenever I wanted to start a new segment? It still keeps what was recorded, just starts a new recording, correct?

Nikos, you are using the wrong tool. SageTV isn't the right solution to your problem - whatever video recording software came with your capture card (or another video recorder) would be better suited to your purposes.

SageTV is geared to record TV shows, using guide data. It isn't a general purpose video recorder, and I don't think you will ever get a satisfactory experience by trying to use it as such.

By default, "Cancel" means "I changed my mind and don't want this recording anymore," not "stop recording now and keep the fragment." There are third-party add-ons that modify this behavior.
