Optimizing on-the-fly transcoding

Hi,

is there a way to optimize on-the-fly transcoding of Divx files to the MVP? What are the minimum system requirements? I'm getting mild stuttering and quite heavy block artefacts on my system. Thanks!

I'd love to know this too. I've just started playing with the idea of compressing the MPG2s down to DivX to save some diskspace and playing back on the MVP. Tested it out with a couple of DivX trailers last night and they seem to "play" - except for stuttering and blockiness as described by Thomas.

My Sage server has an Athlon XP1800+ so I expect it's this that is lacking in horsepower for the DivX->MPG2 transcoding. What's the minimum we need? Would an Athlon XP2600+ do it? (they seem to go cheap these days and I think will fit easily on my mboard without needing other upgrades, fingers crossed).

My AthlonXP 2000 can't handle it either....so I'm guessing something a little more beefy than that is needed. It can transcode the .vobs though. Has anyone from sage actually said what the minimum specs for transcoding divx are?

Ok I've ordered myself a Sempron 2800+ and another 512Mb (to take up to 1Gb) so fingers crossed it'll be speedy enough for the DivX->MVP transcoding now.

"All" I need to sort out now is a nice neat way to get shows encoded to DivX from MPG2 in the first place. I've searched about on the forums but haven't found an easy way of doing this yet. Do I really need to muck about with batch files and stuff?

What I'm looking for is a way to mark certain recordings to be compressed, then for the actual compression to run say between 2am and 6am or whatever. I'm not TOO worried about keeping all the program details although that'd obviously be nice. But if the compressed file has a meaningful name and just appears in the library then that'd be fine if it kept the process simpler.
