Cool HD200 On vacation and on Wifi

I recently purchased the wifi adapter for the HD200. It has worked great at home. We brought it with us on vacation and used the hotel Wifi to placeshift back to the server. Overall it works surprisingly well. There are a couple issues:

1. The hotel requires a login to get on the wifi. In order to get around this I pugged the wifi adapter into a laptop and accepted the conditions in a web browser. I then moved the adapter back to the HD200 and it was able to get online.

2. When streaming the video will stutter. This is most likely due to network congestion. I did a speed test on the Hotel wifi and it measured at 1.2 Mbps. That should be sufficient for streaming. THe other issue could be my cable modem at home. It usually has a upload speed of 1Mbps. In order to prevent the stutters I found that pausing the video for 10-15 seconds helps. That appears to buffer the video and make it stream correctly.

So the question is - Is there a way to adjust the placeshifter settings similar to the placeshifter client? I would like to slow down the bitrate to minimize the stutters. Also it would be nice to tell the HD200 to buffer more video before starting to play.

Nope, I never found a way to adjust the placeshifter streaming options. That would be nice though.

I have a trip to Hawaii coming up. The hotel is a higher-end hotel, so i'm hoping the bandwidth is 'good enough'. Would you say that the HD200 works well enough for me to pack it up, or do I gotta bring the portable 160GB HD along and copy craptons of DVDs?

It works well enough to try it. I found that pausing the show for 10-30 seconds before playing helps. Only problem with that is comskip skips ahead so I had to do that at the beginning of every segment. Bring the HDD too for backup.

What ports do you have to open up on the router to allow an external HD-200 to reach back to the sage server? Thanks!

I think it's 31099

I wrote a guide fro Brent over on geektonic. I did a bit different, and streamed through my laptop wifi. I also had a hard drive with me for my shows so I could still watch them in HD quality. It was still kinda nice to watch the local evening news when I was 800+ miles away.

I also never found any area to change the placeshifter settings.

Hopefully this helps.

Did you have the HD200 in standalone mode, or in extender mode? Was it a USB hard disk plugged into the HD200, or did you bring a router?
