Complete waste of a day with WHS and Hauppauge

Took the day off to rebuild the entire server from the ground up. I knew it was going to be a lot of work, but never did I think I would spend the entire day without even getting to the sage installation part. My Hauppauge PVR500 and 2250 just will not work, they just don't get a signal either through the tuner or the composite in.

New build
Gigabyte ep45 ud3p
2gb ram corsair xms2 800mhz
WHS

I started with 4gb ram then saw the posts about it needing to be 2gb, but that hasn't helped. I have tried downloading drivers from SHS' site, straight from Hauppauge, and I have run hcwclear more times than I care to think about. Now I have to scramble to oput everything back the way it was or there will be no tv for a few days.

Where am I going wrong??

How are you testing them. You're going to have to do a lot of work AFAIK to get video playback working directly on WHS.

True, but shouldn't the wintv app at least pick up the channels in a scan?

You say that this is a new build, so I will assume that this is the first time using WHS as your OS.

Sage didn't intend on the WHS version being used as a client, but rather as a server/service for other HTPC clients or extenders. WHS does not include Java or Direct X needed to run the Sage UI or support playback respectively.

A search of the forums will yield many posts related to your issue. Can WHS be used as a client? In a few cases, yes, with video and capture card drivers being the limiting factors. I and others have been able to use the server as a client, but again, your mileage may vary.

In your case, it should be possible, to use the WinTV app to at least verify that the card is tuning properly. If not, then suggest you verify you're using XP drivers and do a search of these forums to see if your card is being used successfully by anyone else.

Don't know if it will help, but I found that installing WinTV screws things up royally (on XP). I have found that Hauppauge hardware is fine but the application software isn't.

My suggestion is clear the Hauppauge installation, reinstall ONLY THE DRIVERS, and then install SageTV.

yeah, and then fire up placeshifter/client/extender to configure it from another pc/extender.

Great thoughts, thanks to all. I have no intent on using WHS for anything other than being a server, just thought I had to configure things there first. Last time I did anything remotely like this was setting up my hdhr which required (at least back then) a scan with its own software, then a sage scan. I guess things have changed...

How do I know I am using xp drivers?

okay, I used scorched earth method and started over completely with a fresh whs reinstall. Nothing but drivers, all is well thus far.
