I hadn't seen even an update to the diy page in like 6 months... still.. can't believe they are selling good enough to warant a price increase. In fact, it may have been almost a year since I bought mine, and it was the same price then.

I have seen a lot of price comparisons on the HP-DVR and the R5000. I think it is worth mentioning my path-

Go to web site.
Order pre-modded box (ViP211)
Receive pre-modded box
Talk to Dish and get the box enabled in about ten minutes
Go to download software for R5000 AND GET HIT WITH ANOTHER $50 BECAUSE I HAVE THE AUDACITY TO WANT TO USE MY R5000 WITH SAGE.

Points that should be mentioned-
There is no mention of this extra charge on the R5000 order page. You only find it when you want to install the R5000 you have already bought.
I asked technical questions regarding SageTV and the R5000 before I bought my converted R5000 so they knew I was going that direction and did not mention the extra cost.

Now I realize that $50 is but a 10% adder but it just torques me off to have a company sell me something then insist I pay more to use it. If the Sage version is $50 more, say so and I will pay it or I will not buy the product but do not let me purchase and receive your product only to have to pay to actually use it.

The product is fantastic (from a Newbie's perspective) but the marketing tactics speak for the quality of people you are purchasing from. I was told they would look into it. I just checked their web site and there is still no mention of a $50 adder if you want to use one of their pre-modded 211s with Sage.

I tend to be swayed more by what a company does than what they say and I have two examples now of what they do.

Be aware if in the future you wish to add a 2nd 3rd or 4th R5000 stb that's another *fifty bucks.
*they been know to discount the $99 for folks that already own one unit

Oh, and here's the page you missed during your research

Yep, I found that page when I actually went to USE my R5000 ViP211. I normally download and install software after I recieve the hardware to make sure I get the absolute latest install and drivers from the manufacturer.

I do not know this for a fact, but I suspect that most customers follow my path in that they buy the hardware then find out they have to pay more to use it. A simple note on the hardware page that says "See software page (link) for costs associated with differnt applications" is all that is needed to complete the picture for a customer. This does not exist and I do not think that is by mistake.

Do not get me wrong. I understand if adding network tuner support to the R5000 framework for Sage was time consuming and they needed to recoup their investment. I can also understand if they did not want to burden all sales with the Sage specific work. What I had a problem with is not being up front in their pricing.

yeah, I also new about it long before I purchased mine. I have foudn them to be quite helpful (on the sales side). The software, until recently, was pretty bad (and there are still some quirks with it - The tabbing is actually a nuisance, and I'd prefer individual apps for each tuner), but overall, things on the R-5000 front have improved greatly in the last year (so much so that I took my 1 box setup, to a 3 box setup).
