HD-PVR on seperate x1 USB Card May Help.

Just an FWIW - I have one of the Asus boards that has a ton of USB ports on the back - a P5Q premium. It's got something like 10 on the back plus headers inside. Insane. I have had a lot of intermittent issues with my PVR-USB2's and my HD-PVR.

On a lark, I bought a $30 x1 USB card with a NEC chipset. My HD-PVR started acting up today. Sage would not get a channel to be able to be viewed or recorded, although the USB-UIRT changed channels just fine on the STB it is hooked up to. I moved the HD-PVR to the card and so far problem has not followed it. Just another thing to consider if you are having problems.

I think a lot of board makers are cramming way too much onto these boards and tricking them into doing things they can't really handle.

Since a single x1 lane supports 250MB/s and an OTA ATSC should max around 20Mb/s or 2.5MB/s, the card should be able to handle the bandwidth of a HD-PVR and some other USB tuners without too much trouble.

Just an FWIW

I've seen lots of problems like this. The video streaming is just such a picky scenario, that crappy/iffy USB chipsets, and unstable gigabit switches can cause all sort of frustration. The NEC USB chips certainly seem to be the most stable.

I suspected the same thing months ago and put a PCI USB card on my ASUS motherboard to run the HDPVRs.
Unfortunately, made no change in lockup frequencies.

I don't think it has anything to do with the HDPVR lockups (admittidly though, Idon't have one). That genuinly seems to be a problem in teh HD-PVR, as most have gotten them replaced and the lock-ups go away. This is more of a solution to the stuttering and stream errors people are experiencing with many different sources (HD-PVR, R-5000, PVR-USB2, etc)

I have replaced mine, currently have a E1 and it still locks up.

To me the "Lock ups" are either heat or Dolby Digital related, because I have not had a single lock up since mounting a fan on the HD-PVR and switching the audio to "Stereo Only".
