BSOD after upgrade to 6.6.1

6.5.9 has been running for several months without a hitch. I copied my sagetv folder as a backup and then upgraded to 6.6.1. Now, the machine BSODs after trying to access live tv!

Channel scans do complete successfully, but accessing live TV or previewing a channel in the channel setup causes a bsod and a subsequent "Windows has recovered from a serious error"

Stopping the service and renaming my 6.5.9 folder back to SageTV causes everything to work again as normal.

Slightly unusual setup as follows:-

Host:- VMware Server 2.0
Guest:- Windows XP SP3
Tuners:- 2 x PCI Nova 500 dual DVB-T tuners in the host, which appear as USB tuners in the guest.
Guest RAM:- 900Mb
SageMC 6.3.8a (upgraded to 6.3.9 with SageTV 6.6.1)

Here is an excerpt from the log. I had done a channel scan with one of the tuners, and then tried to view live tv. The "Waiting for Data" message continues for another 30 seconds until the BSOD.

Any pointers to diagnose this much appreciated!

cheers...

Do you know what the BSOD stop code is?

Is there a minidump file created in the windows folder? and is there any extra info in the event logs?

Stop code in the event log is

Error code 100000d1, parameter1 00000060, parameter2 00000002, parameter3 00000000, parameter4 f78e6d6e.

the BSOD says IRQ not equal to (or similar message) and names usbehci.sys.

I used to have issues with usbehci.sys when running the 2 Nova 500 tuners in server 2003 on a physical machine. There are several threads on the Hauppauge forums on this, but no real solution. This is why I switched back to XP.

What puzzles me is that it works fine with 6.5.9

I had the USBEHCI.SYS issues with XP SP3, so I went back to SP2, though I've now moved the nova-t-500 to my vista machine which has no problems with it, and replaced it with a Terratec Cinergy 2400i DT.

I don't know if its possible for you but I'd try reverting to SP2.
Mine worked flawlessly on SP2.

I don't understand why the new version of Sage would affect things though, that is strange.

Can you recover your computer to a disk image before the BSOD occurred?

Yes, I have a snapshot of the disk from before the upgrade. I have tried going back and reinstalling 6.6.1 but still the same result.

But after the upgrade, version 6.5.9 still works fine if I rename 6.6.1 to something else, and rename my 6.5.9 directory back to SageTV.

My fallback if all else fails is to try Vista, or a clean install of XP.

Unfortunately, I can't uninstall SP3 as the base build was SP3.

Thanks for the quick responses!

More investigation!

1. Clean install of XP SP2 as a new vm
2. All windows updates (except SP3)
3. Latest Hauppage drivers v4_3_26168
4. Base Install of SageTV 6.6.1
5. Start SageTV and configure.
SageTV completed channel scan, and found channels.
Viewing a channel gave "no signal" but did not BSOD!
Leaving a channel tuned for some minutes sometimes caused it to tune in and display picture

6. Rename SageTV directory to SageTVbaseinstall
7. Copy c:\program files\SageTV (6.6.1) directory from old machine to new machine
8. Start SageTV on new vm.
Channel scan completes sucessfully
Viewing a channel causes BSOD!

So, in summary, I still get BSOD on SP2 when copying over the 6.6.1 install from SP3, and a clean 6.6.1 install on SP2 does not quite work properly, but does not BSOD.

I think the 6.6.1 upgrade is accessing the tuners in a different way from 6.5.9.

Any suggestions? :-)

I just noticed Andy's update saying 6.6.2 is now out which includes the no signal fix so you could try that instead of installing 6.6.1 and then updating the tssplitter.ax manually.

Also, I read this a while ago on the Hauppauge forum

http://www.hauppauge.co.uk/board/sho...&postcount=327

If you want to run XP SP3 you can use this batch file to revert the usbehci.sys and related files back to version 2180 (pre sp3) so that the nova-t-500 should work.

It worked on my test system but I didn't try it on my live system.

As with all these type of fixes, you take your life into your own hands and it could kill the PC completely, so if your tempted, then backup and test, and be prepared for the worst just incase.
