Question Media extender question

I am a new user to sagetv and i have the media extenders set up throughout my house and it works great. What i want to be able to do is use an extender in another house and connect to my media server over the internet. Has anyone done this or are any media extenders capable of connecting to the media server over the internet?

I believe the Placeshifter option sagetv sells is what you are looking for. Not 100% sure as I have never used it.

As viperdiablo alluded to, the HD100 and HD200 extenders have a "placeshifter" mode of operation that let's you use the device over the Internet. You don't need any special license for this- your existing HD100 or HD200 license will let you do placeshifting on the extenders.

There is a Placeshifter client for computers to. You do need to purchase a separate license for each placeshifting client you want connected at any given time. For instance, you could have 4 computers with the Placeshifter application on it, but if only one computer is going to be connected to your server at any given time you only need one license. You can also "share" HD100 licenses with PC-based Placeshifters (but you can't share HD200 licenses).

I've never tried using my extenders in placeshifter mode, so I can't comment on how well it works. But, comments on the forums have been pretty positive. Video quality, of course, is going to heavily depend on bandwidth- upstream bandwidth on your server's end specifically (in almost all cases).

Placeshifter on the HD200, as mentioned above. But what is your upstream bandwidth from your home?

I looked into the hd100 or the hd200 and i can get an mvpmedia player cheaper about $60 compared to almost $200 for either of the others. Is there any way to hard code the ip address in the mvpmedia player in order to have it connect through the internet to the server?

I'm not sure if that's possible on the MediaMVP. But, even if it is, I think it's probably a bad idea. If you were the use the MediaMVP that way, you'd just be streaming the mpeg2 videos as they were recorded. Technically your internet speed is fast enough to do that for standard definition TV, but I wouldn't count on that being consistent enough for reliable streaming.

With the HD200, you'd get a special placeshifter mode. Video would be recompressed to mpeg4 with dynamic quality, depending on your connection speed at any given time. You'd get some kind of buffer, but I'm not sure how big it ends up being on the HD200. I think the HD extenders have quite a bit of RAM, so the buffer size is probably plenty.

The MVP doesn't support placeshifting, it doesn't support decoding the MPEG-4 used for it.

And "15" and "20" what? Mbps? Is that reliable? If so (well WOW! for one, 15Mbps upstream ) you "might" be able setup a VPN and use the MVP over that.
