HDHR native tuning

What is it about the HDHR that Sage cannot control it natively? I see progress was made on the OTA side, and I hope some is made on the QAM side too.

Having to jump through hoops to get these tuners working in Sage is a bit nuts. It seems like if you guys put your heads together with SiliconDust you should be able to come up with a better solution.

The HDHR has been the most unreliable tuner I have ever used.

I'm not 100% sure but I was under the impression that if you wanted to you could just run a standard QAM scan in Sage on the HDHR if you hadn't already run a scan in the HDHR software and there are no .SCN files.

You've obviously never tried to get an HD-PVR working then. My HDHR has been like a rock until SiliconDust screwed up on the 15th. My HD-PVR's on the other hand? In the beginning... daily, if not hourly, issues. Now? I'd say weekly.

I have a C2 model HD-PVR and fell back to the last pre-AC3 driver and haven't had a single hiccup with the unit itself. The ONLY problem I've had is that the STB it attaches to has gone bonkers a couple of times.

I wasn't affected by the HDHR bug that was addressed on the 15th because mine is on a private network that links only the HDHR to my server. There is no routing to the internet.

The other topic is for the HDHR setup instructions; I've split this to its own topic for the general discussion of what you want it to do instead.

Personally, I don't want to use native tuning in the HDHR. I like the fact that the channel mapping can be configured in the HDHR's Channel Editor & then that info is used to automatically map the channels in SageTV. Using a backup of the HDHR's xml file of channel info makes it simple for me to reconfigure the HDHR tuner when I rescan for channels & compare to the info from the previous scan. QAM setup with other tuners is more difficult in comparision.

And, the HDHR has been the most reliable tuner I've used -- except for the one-time blip the other day that has already been fixed, I have never had an issue with my HDHR. I certainly don't need to disconnect it from my SageTV system when I go on vacation for fear that it would bring all recording to a halt like my HD-PVRs do on a regular basis, nor does it need daily monitoring to make sure it is still working.

SageTV does natively control the HDHomeRun. As Andy mentioned, the scan within HDHomeRun Setup is done to pull all the channel data in from our lineup server so that you don't have to enter 20 or 200 different channel names inside SageTV. This doesn't need to be done for OTA broadcasts because the broadcaster includes what is known as PSIP data; basically, the station includes its name and number in the stream so that your TV or tuner knows what to call it and where to put it. Most cable providers only include this for a few of their channels (the local broadcasts) while leaving it out of every other channel. My own cable provider has 200-odd clear QAM channels and doesn't have PSIP on any of them, making for a long, tedious process of renaming if I don't use our lineup server.
