Playing AVI Files
Does anyone know if sage should be able to play AVI files, or do you need to download a seperate codec pack for that? I am getting an error when trying to play back any AVI Files.
Thanks, Gabe |

It should be able to. It used to, but has stopped working for me with a recent upgrade. This is one of the items I was looking to toruble shoot but have not had time yet. So, if others have ideas (modification to the properties file?) that would be very helpful.
Otherwise, knowing it is more than just me now, I will submit a bug report and see what we get back. |

After a little trouble shooting, I found mine works fine on the server (with the Nivdia Purevideo decoder) and my MVPs, but did not work on my HD-100. Upon flashing the firmware to the most recently supported ... non-beta ... firmware everything appears to be good to go for me now. If you are still having trouble, I would point you to submitting your own bug report.

SageTV can playback AVI files. However, it depends on how you have SageTV setup. For example, my tuner card is a Hauppauge 350, it can only playback mpeg2 files, not AVI files. I have MVP units which will playback AVI files, but not directly. The AVI files that are played back with SageTV on the computer are transcoded on-the-fly from AVI to Mpeg2 so they can be played back on the MVP. The transcoding does take some processing power, which is not a problem for a dual or quad core system. With a fast dual-core, you can transcode two streams on-the-fly and record three other programs at the same time without any problems. If you use a HD-200, the extender can play the AVI files directly without requiring the computer to transcode the files on-the-fly, reducing the SageTV's CPU load.

Hi Dave,
I had a single core CPU until recently and it had no problems transcoding two SD SVIs to the MVPs in my home at the same time. I do only have one tuner card though, so I can't comment on that aspect of it. Todd |

I've been having problems with this, too. I can only get AVI playback to work with Sage when the video settings are set to use Sage's own codecs. If I try to use DirectShow with my normal codecs (divx, xvid, etc.) I get an error message.
I wouldn't care, except that my machine seems to run a couple of degrees hotter when I'm playing AVI files and I think it might be contributing to some instability. Anyone able to use a different codec?
