Vista, HDHomeRun, Service mode and missing .SCN

OK,

I have been dialoguing over on the HDHomerun forum about missing .scn files. Here is the background...
Setup: Vista 32bit Ultimate SP1, HDHomerun (hdhomerun_windows_20081002.exe), SageTV 6.5.9 in service mode

I do all the setup through HDHomerun/Zap2it etc. In vista, the .scn files get saved to the "virtual" sageTV directory. And here is the crazy part...if I run SageTV app w/o service mode, all is well and the .SCN files are found in their virtual location and it "works". But in service mode (which I think is critical for the 7x24 server box) it does not see the virtual location...and only looks in the actual Programs\SageTV location. Doesn't matter if I log in as .\Mike (my user ID) or as Local machine in the servicesSageTV app...it just won't see them. I copy the .SCN files from the virtual location to the SageTV location and all is good...but I don't like this cludge cause I'll likely forget...any ideas?

As long as you have UAC enabled, I don't know of a way around that side effect currently. As you've seen, the HDHR software puts the .scn file in the VirtualStore, while the SageTV service doesn't use the VirtualStore.

It is because of UAC it happens. You could try to set the SageTV service to log in as the same user ID and password that you use when you start up Vista. It might then use the files out of the Virtual Store. (Right now you probably have SageTV service running with the local system account which is why it uses the regular Program Files\SageTV directory.) (You need to use a user ID and password to run SageTV as a service with a user ID.) Other than that you would just need to copy the .scn files in both places any time you rescan with the HDHR software. It shouldn't be that often.

I should have noted I have tried logging in the service as both local and as my active user ID but it didn't change the behavior. It does seem to be a sage problem...as Sage itself seems to have two different configuration profiles...the one if I launch SageTV as a service and the one if I launch SageTV as an application...it "forgets all my changes between the two profiles"...seems like Sage should make changes on it's end to ensure that launching directly or as a service, the app doesn't behave differently...the configuration of SageTV is bad enough without having to do it twice and independently...

I can live with it, but it is just one more sageTV quirk...and SageTV could do with less quirk work arounds if they want to expand their user base...

Disable UAC and the problem should go away. It is the first thing I do after I install Vista.
