Updated new installation instructions?
The instructions here seem to be out-of-date: http://www.sagetv.com/linuxOEMinstall.html is there an updated guide anywhere?
And I noticed on other posts comments along the lines of SageTV favours ubuntu. Does that mean I should use it rather than gentoo? I'm looking to make a PC that will only run sage - ideally locked into the client... Thanks, Mick |

If you are going to use Ubuntu then you'll need the other link:
http://www.sagetv.com/linuxOEMinstallAdv.html It is also a little out of date. As far as I know, they use a customized version of Gentoo, so you might as well go with Ubuntu. Of all the distributions I've used recently, it's really pretty slick. There are tons of people using it, which makes solving problems potentially a bit easier. Keep in mind, SageTV itself is just another app and there potentially lots of other interesting things to do with a box than dedicating it any single app.

Thanks for that - I'm looking at an appliance kind of solution so don't want to run anything else - ubuntu is nice but prob way overkill - was thinking their custom gentoo might have been trimmed down. I might look around for a very light-weight distro to use and follow those instructions you posted the link to.

We'll be updating these directions soon; sorry they're so out of date.
The new ones are essentially this: 1) Install Ubuntu 2) Install SageTV debian package for Ubuntu (you'll need a license key for the server package) Have fun and play with SageTV You may need to install additional drivers depending upon if you're using newer tuner hardware or not (i.e. HDPVR or HVR 1600/1800) but most other devices already have the drivers in the Linux kernel (and the HDHomeRun doesn't need a driver or any extra software to work with SageTV on Linux)

Light-weight == ArchLinux (IMHO)
Is this a playback machine or just server? B

This is tempting. But my win box is working fine now, so maybe I'll just remember this for the future.

Well, this thread seems fairly recent so I'll post my questions here... I'm a long time PC guy with years of experience as a developer, so I know my way around a PC without problems
I currently have SageTV running on Windows. The server also is used as a client. I just built a new machine to try to consolidate the oh so many computers I have running. It's a Quad core Phenom II, 8GB RAM and 4TB Raid 5 running Ubuntu Server (32bit which I was surprised to learn could address up to 64GB of RAM not requiring the x64 build). Amazing what you can buy this setup for... <$800!!! My questions are as follows 1) I have a second server license that is not being used but used to be a network encoder running on Windows. Can this license be used for a Linux server? 2) I'm very new to Linux but am willing to experiment... it seems that the client side of the Linux server is Placeshifter. is this correct? 3) Is this something I should even consider attempting with 2x Haup 150 cards an HDPVR and an HDHomeRun? And I use MCE remotes to control the interface (but not as blaster) There appear to be drivers for everything. 4) I use DTV Serial control (two USB to Serial adapaters plugged in back to back to control the USB DirecTV receivers and it seems to work well in Windows, will it work via Linux? Or will I need to pull out the mothballed USB-UIRT? Any thoughts, advice would be appreciated, and any help on the questions above would be as well! Thanks |

DirecTV serial works fine. This of course will depend on your adapters, etc. I, in the past, have used the TV Translator II from www.patersontech.com to control 4 DirecTV boxes.

Thanks to each of you for the information! This will be the project for the coming weekend... I wish that sever license was good for linux, as I'll have extra licenses now, but in the overall scheme of things that's trivial. I'll report back anything I discover that may be of use to others.

deeoji, +1 here too for the Linux and Windows licenses being interchangable. That would be a really positive thing in my opinion. No doubt Sage have good reasons for not doing this, maybe it's due to the support entitlements - the linux license is OEM. |
