Re-Recording in HD?

We have around 220 Friends episodes which were recorded in rather bad quality.

The few Friends recordings we have in HD are obvious much better quality. Is there a way to tell Sage to replace existing recordings when they come out in HD?

I don't want to delete the existing recordings until the HD equivalent comes out, so I am looking for a way to tell it to re-record an existing show when the HD equivalent is available.

If you insist on keeping the existing recordings then the only way Sage will ever record the HD versions is by manually scheduling them to record. No favourite rule will record them since Sage will see them as already existing on your system.

You could write a plugin that periodically scans your EPG and marks the HD versions for manual recording. There are pitfalls involved in this (the major one being that manual recordings always take precedence over scheduled favourites).

You could also use my SJQ plugin to accomplish this, but it works a little differently than the way I think you want it to. If you configured SJQ to do this for you, it would schedule the HD recording for you, but as soon as it schedules the HD recording it will immediately delete the SD recording from your system (but it only deletes the original recording if it successfully scheduled the HD recording). If you trust your EPG data then this shouldn't be a problem. SJQ does this by use of manual recordings so the same pitfall of your schedule possibly being filled with manual recordings still exists.

Cool thanks. That will work. As you said, not exactly what I want, but as long as it can record the HD version, then that's ok.

Thanks again.

But couldn't you actually backup all of your existing SD files to another directory so that you don't actually lose them. If you copy them back into the TV folder then Sage should recognize them.

I would copy the SD recordings to a directory is not searched by Sage. Then clear Freinds watched status.

I think it's sort of funny that I was thinking about posting something on this exact issue. I have some House episodes in SD and now that I have firewire recording setup it would be nice to get Sage to automatically record the HD versions when they play on USAHD. The SJQ plugin sounds interesting, although in my case it's probably easier for me to just watch the upcoming recordings delete the SD shows manually. I only have about 20 old episodes sitting on my computer, and they they tend to come in groups, so it's a bit more manageable.
