Networking Help - McAfee Messed Up Local PC Name Resolution!

Against my better judgment I decided to give the McAfee Security Suite a try since it was free with Cox internet. However, now that I have uninstalled it my PC can't seem to resolve local PC names to IP addresses.

That is, now if I try to access the Sage webserver on my PC named BASEMENT (http://basement:8080/sage) it will not find the page but if I use the specific IP address (http://192.168.0.2:8080/sage) it displays the page as expected. This definitely worked before I tried @#!*@ McAfee.

Anyone have any ideas what happened and how to fix it without reinstalling Vista? It's weird but I used "nbtstat" from the command line and it did return BASEMENT with the correct workgroup but if I try to ping BASEMENT it does not work.

Make sure NETBios over TCP/IP is still enabled. (McAfee may have disabled it.) Here is the other thing to check.
Quote:
his issue may occur if the computer is configured to use p-node mode for name resolution. To determine whether a computer is configured to use p-node mode, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
2. At the command prompt, type ipconfig /all, and then press ENTER.

View the Node Type section at the start of the output. If the value that appears on the screen is Peer-Peer, the computer is running in p-node mode.

In p-node mode, the computer uses only point-to-point name queries to a Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) server. However, the WINS server is not available for NetBIOS name resolution on a peer-to-peer network.

Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
322756 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756/ ) How to back up and restore the registry in Windows

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBt\Parameters
3. In the right pane of Registry Editor, delete the following values if they are present:
* NodeType
* DhcpNodeType
Note If the NodeType value is present, this value will override the DhcpNodeType value. If neither subkey is present and if no WINS servers are configured for the client, the computer uses b-node mode. If at least one WINS server is configured, the computer uses h-node mode.
4. Quit Registry Editor.
5. Restart the computer.
6. Try to view workgroup computers on the network again.
Hope that helps.

Thanks, Gerry.

Unfortunately nothing seems to be fixing it. I did have a "DhcpNodeType" registry entry that I deleted but this didn't make a difference. I guess I will just have to use actual IP addresses until I decide to reinstall Vista. Frustrating...

Go into the Network and Sharing Center and make sure that Network discovery is still turned on and that you are still set fpr a private network. You should actually see you workgroup name (private network) in the center of the windows.

Everything looks to be ok - I can't identify anything that seems out-of-whack. What's kind of odd is that the BASEMENT computer name does show up in Windows Explorer and I can access the shared drives just fine. However, my browsers and Sage Client can't connect when using the name (I have to use the IP address)??
