What Operating System?
I'm using a single system for my recording and playback and i'm wondering what operating system most people have the most success with.
Currently i'm using XP Pro SP2 32bit edition but i'm wondering if there's any benefit in switching to Vista or a 64bit solution. -Striker- |

Vista would get you better video playback with EVR. I would stay 32bit uness you know all your tuners/hardware have 64bit drivers. You don't have to go Ultimate. You'll have to contend with and turn off the VMC services.

I'm using Vista x64 fine, only problem was my old PVR-350 isn't supported. No biggy, the 2250 is, but would be nice to have the remote interfact of the 350.

I just reloaded XP32 and will setup Vista64 Ult next weekend to see for myself.
I found all my drivers including HD-PVR's and 2250 but have a few questions for 64bit people... 1. Does Vista64 play nice with multiple HD-PVR's? 2. Is there a Vista64 driver for the Hauppauge remote?

I haven't had any problems with vista x64 ultimate and drivers. I'm running a *sheepish* pinnacle 800i, and a hauppauge hvr 1600. the HVR i just purchased yesterday, and am still working everything out, I'm pretty much brand new to sage - my trial just became a purchase this week in fact. I'm googling like crazy to figure out how to get the new card + blaster + remote to work properly.
So far, the remote seems to work, and from irblast config i can make the set top box turn on and off, and change channels, but i can't get it to do that when i push buttons on my remote. It may be my newbishness, or it may be a vista x64 glitch, but for what its worth i thought you might like to know =). Ken

I am running Vista Ultimate 64bit (mostly for the increased Ram support) with HDHomeRun (recording QAM), and a cheap ATI 5500 (analog capture). I have an MCE remote which would start Media Center if I accidentally hit the MC button. Instead of changing the permissions on the process that looks for the button (which seemed to be a pain) I just setup my Logitech remote to use all the MC buttons except the ones that caused media center to open. I also disabled the MC services. [strike]I am not yet using EVR, just Nvidia decoder, ffdshow and AC3 Filter with VMR9.[/strike] Update: As of the 6.5 release the above setup was stuttering during HD playback so I switched to EVR, Microsoft MPEG2 Decoder, FFDshow, and AC3Filter instead of the Nvidia decoder. I have not looked into other MPEG2 codecs.
It has been stable as long as MC does not open. I partially did this as a test to see how Vista64 was and I have decided to keep it instead of going back to my old standby of XP. I had everything up and running with Vista64 and SageTV much faster than my previous XP efforts. My Hauppauge MCE250 card has no Vista64 drivers hence the ATI 5500 Analog capture card. I do think you need a somewhat decent computer to run Vista, capture and playback HD. Last edited by limiter; 02-10-2009 at 03:53 PM. Reason: Update information |
