Lost recordings

I upgraded a this afternoon to 6.4.8 and there are no recordings in Sagetv recordings now. No I didn't do a backup, I got complacent. My folder shows several Wiz.bin files from version 5.0.2 up to 6.3.5. Interesting because I thought I was on 6.1.8. I keep a copy of each upgrade I do and I don't have 6.3. I might have upgraded at some point and then rolled back. There is no 6.4 Wiz.bin there is a Wiz.bak that was created yesterday before I upgraded.

Do I have any options to restore this at this point.

Thanks,
Mike

Try using the win.bak from yesterday. Make a copy and rename it wiz.bin. Make a copy of your current wiz.bin and put that somewhere else. (Even though it's not what you want to use.) Drop your renamed wiz.bin in place. Make sure you have quit SageTV/shutdown the SageTV service before attempting any of this. If that truly was yesterday's copy you should have your recordings back. But if you left SageTV running for a period of time another .bak could have been made over it. Good Luck.

Thanks for the response. With Sage and the service shut down, I moved all of the Wiz files to a different folder an renamed the Bin file to Binold and the BAK to Bin. No joy. I even tried it a second time. I think I'm hosed.

Can anyone tell me what the Wiz.bin.Sagetv V6.1.** etc are?

Mike

Every time you run a new version after installing a SageTV update, it will create backups of the database & properties file by adding the version number to the end of the file. Try copying the one from your previous version of SageTV and rename the copy to wiz.bin.

Are you sure you are trying to use the correct wiz.bin? If you are using Vista, it could be that the service & non-service modes are using different locations for wiz.bin & the .properties files. There is a FAQ item about the VirtualStore locations.

I've had quite a day today. Just after you posted your message I lost power. I renamed the 6.1.8 version to Wiz.bin and that got my programs back! I think that's at least twice you've saved my bacon Andy. I've been running Sage for about 2.5 years and there were a lot of shows in that menu.

All is not well however. Whenever I try to do most anything, I get an endless spinning circle. As an example, I pushed the stop button before I started typing this and it hasn't stopped yet. I type real slow! I like the look of 6.4 but this problem and filters on the recordings page are going to push me back to the old version. Those filters will confuse my wife. She already has problems with the music page because of them.

I don't have any customizations installed and I'm assuming that I just need to copy the previous versions property file and Wiz bin and drop them in when I install the previous version. Any thing I'm missing?

Thanks for y'alls help,
Mike

PS. the circle is still spinning!

You can try getting a debug log if you want to see whether there is any info about why it is getting stuck.

You may want to check for a Java update & install that.

If you just want to revert, there is a sticky in the beta forum about installing a new version & how to revert. The old wiz.bin & properties files should be all you need to do that.

Thanks Andy, That's what I thought, but I wanted to verify and avoid another serious problem. I'll be on this later this afternoon.

Thanks, Mike

Just thought I'd update this add a little info and close it out. As it turns out I got my recordings back but it was an old file. I had upgraded from 6.1 to 6.3 at some point and then rolled back to 6.1. The file that Andy talks about above should have been updated during the install but for some reason it wasn't and the new Wiz wasn't created either. The file I used was from last year in Jan. so I lost a year of recording info. I'm just glad I didn't lose it all.

Mostly I'm posting as a reminder to others not to get complacent. I've done a bunch of upgrades and never lost my Wiz, this time I didn't make a copy and I got bit. It is very easy to make a copy of the needed files.

In the long run I updated to 6.4 to get support for the HDHR's that I bought and my second install went without a hitch.

Thanks for the help,
Mike
