6.5.3 High memory useage and CPU?
Just noticed tonight that we're getting an abnormally high memory & CPU usage from the latest version. I usually hover around 250-270mb used memory for the SageTV service, as well as around 20-30% +- CPU usage, but today my memory usage was around 580mb, and CPU was around 60-70%. I restarted the Sage service, and right now my CPU is going between 25-40%, and memory is staying right around 375m. My system wasn't don't this prior to the 6.5.3 upgrade, so I can only assume that's the cause. My network encoder machine (XP, also running 6.5.3), is sitting at 84m memory, 2% usage (recording 2 streams at the moment as well). THat's with 3 clients on the system (2 HD100's, and 1 MVP, but only 2 doing anything). I have also noticed sometimes I also get a System service that uses all available CPU (the HD100's start skipping, slowly at first, but it gets faster and faster), and restarting the Sage service seems to fix the problem for a bit, but a restart is usually a quicker/better fix...

Our setups are almost identical, except I have 2xPVR500 in mine, (Otherwise AMD x2 4800,2 GB RAM 1.5TB, Vista Ultimate 64) and I have seen the same thing. With Only one HD100 running and playing back a file, and then just one transcoding session going, my both CPUs can get pegged at 100%.
Just curious what version of java? I am running 1.6.11. |

do you know if it was happening in 6.5.2?

http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=37353 prior to 6.5.2, i would never have more than one single core being used t0 100%, but 6.5.2 and 6.5.3 will peg both cores.

Don't remember it doing this particular thing before the 6.5.2 beta, and I do remember making a change on that key in the sage.properties file... What's the default for that line (or did I have to add it, I can't remember). Might have to remove that setting and see if it helps at all.

I have also had high memory usage in the past. Sage and Sage Service would sometimes get into the 300MB each range. It seems to be when I had the HD100 in use that it got this high but would not go back down even if I powered down the HD100. I would have to restart Sage + Service.
Well, now I have upgraded to 6.5.3 and it seemed to be the same thing, no difference...Until I hooked up a new HD200. Now I started seeing some skipping on the HD100 and HD200 and it was getting worse. I checked my Memory and CPU and sure enough 1.2GB between the Sage Service(600MB) and Sage.exe(600MB). Plus Sage was using around 20% of my Q6600 I have already ordered another HD200 and plan to hook it up as soon as I get it but then will I be looking into the 2GB+ range???

I'm noticing that my System (NT Kernel & System) process if using ALL available free processor time, which I've read is a driver problem.. Not sure what's causing it, but I'd sure like to get it fixed (this is something that's just started after the betas of 6.5, but I'm not 100% sure it's Sage related, could possiblly be a driver I updated recently).
My spiked System usage may very well have been from an older version of the PVR500 drivers (I just recently added a PVR500 to the server machine, and this could have very well created the spike in my System usage). I updated them with SHS's latest driver disk, and I'll keep an eye on it tonight to see if it spikes again..

I'm running the latest beta now, and the problem with System using all available resources so far hasn't come up. I'm wondering if the disabling of the new network encoder optimizations might have been the fix..

I've been using 6.5.2 and I'm also seeing double my normal CPU usage. Instead of about 20% average I'm seeing 40%. I just updated to 6.5.5 RC and I am still seeing the same thing. My setup is practically a clean install of my OS and drivers. It was a while back when I first read this thread and tried changing the xcode_process_num_threads property and it had no effect. Now using 6.5.5 RC I don't even see the property line anywhere anymore. Has there been any answer to this issue?
EDIT: I found out it is from using EVR vs VMR9. Switching back to VMR9 my CPU usage goes back to under 20% Last edited by craigap; 01-02-2009 at 01:25 PM. |

Still a problem on 6.5.5
My setup is on WHS (server). I had some problems with stuttering on a MVP client after moving it. This problem turned out to be caused by a network configuration issue. However, when I looked for possible explanations I noticed my WHS server had 1,8 GB of its memory used. When I restarted the SageTV service memory usage dropped to 800 MB instantly.
I really have not experienced CPU and memory problems on my PC client, but the SageTV service defintively has memory usage issues also on 6.5.5!

Same Problem Here
I'm running an AMD x2 4400, 1.5gb ram, dedicated media/sage server hooked up to a single client (hd100) via a gigabit switch. running sage 6.5.5, latest firmware on the hd100. Clean install of XP professional with all drivers updated. Running latest java (1.6.11 i think).
Other PCs (1x desktop, 1x laptop connect) to the server via lan shares (desktop wired via the gigabit switch, laptop via 54g WLAN) to access media, docs, software, etc. I'm seeing the SageTvService.exe use up about 600mb of ram. If I restart the service, mem usage drops to about 180mb (what I consider normal) and gradually increases to around 600mb over a period of about 10 days. CPU usage is reasonably normal (10-20% watching 1080i broadcasts) Is this high memory usage normal? Thanks in advance. |
