CPU useage w/ FFDSHOW
Hi All,
Well after reading some of the previous posts, decided to give FFDSHOW a try. The difference is truely amazing, even when compared to NVidia decoders. However, I've noticed that the CPU useage jumps up dramatically when using it. If I were to use the intervideo decoder, or the Nvidia for that matter according to Task Manager I'm around 10-15%. However, when switching to FFDSHOW it goes up to 90%. Just wondering if this is normal, and are there any tips/tricks to bring it down to a more realistic percentage. Thanks |

What settings are you using? What resolution? Filters, etc.?

Desktop setting is 1152x864. Video renderer is VMR9, DXVA MPEG mode is set to default, Deinterlacing is Bob and Weave. As far as the FFDSHOW settings, since I just started to experiment with it I used the basic setting as outlined in Joshua Schipmann's guide:
Raw Video: all supported Blur and NR moved to the top w/ dnoise3d luma to .5, the chroma to .5, the time to 5 Resize and Aspect setting set to the same as my desktop Luma and Chroma Sharpen set to 1.5 |

well how fast is your processor ?
that quite a load for using VMR9 you fair better using overlay or not using ffdshow with VMR9 and instead using hardware acceleration |

Really dont think the processor is a problem. Just recently built the PC and bought the AMD 64 3800, and have 1 gig of ram to go along with it. I'll try experimenting with the settings you sugested and see if there's any difference. I'll keep you guys posted on the results.

well it looks like VMR9 and ffdshow have taken down the best out there then
these basic settings look pretty advanced to me but dropping VMR9 should reduce CPU usage by about 20-30 % what video card are you using? |

Tried using the Video Overlay Renderer but when I reloaded Media player it came back with an error stating "Failed Connection video stream to the overlay mixer". Then tried the default Video Renderer and it made very little difference (perhaps 5-10%).
Video card is an ATI X800Pro. |

yeah alot of it is the SageTV UI
check out the hotfix for directx 9c doubt this will give you any CPU usage difference with the ffdshow settings but may open up other options you could also try overclocking the CPU my on AVS forum have done this to reduce CPU usage when using ffdshow |
