Question regarding device name property
I want to rename my tuners. While adjusting some settings in the properties file I came across "mmc/encoders/1243213672/video_capture_device_name=Hauppauge WinTV...". Is it ok to change the tuner name by editing this setting? I would prefer editing the property, if possible, rather than installing the plugin or editing my registry.

You could check out this plugin: Encoder Names
it's for the default STV and it changes the name to anything you want in the parallel recording schedule. Support thread here: Support thread Gerry

Thanks for the links, but as I said I'd rather not use an import if SageTV already can handle this. Specifically exactly what does this property do? It's not documented in the manual.

Sorry. But IMHO using a plugin that does what you're looking for is safer than editing lines in the .properties file. If you don't like the plugin then just reload the previous stv. Hopefully someone has an answer for what those lines do and what else may depend on those lines.

I know this is an old thread on an even older plugin, but it should do exactly what I want. I tried it and it doesn't seem to work. I'm using SageMC and SageTV 6.6.2. Are there any tricks to this?

I'm not sure but is the plug in designed to work with sage mc? I use the regular stv with extras enabled and the plug in works for me.

It turns out it works with MC as long as you use the Parallel Schedule from the original STV. I am using the Horizontal Parallel Schedule and it didn't work for it because the plugin didn't update it. I edited the STV to use the same method for reading the encoder names and it works fine now.
