3D Acceleration in Vista

Does the Placeshifter need an nVidia card for 3D acceleration to work? I have an Intel GMA X3100 on my Dell Inspiron 1525, and with this enabled, the placeshifter is just black. Switching 3D off and Placeshifter works fine, just that Vista Aero shuts off and goes to Basic.

I can't speak about your specific situation, but I can turn on hardware acceleration on an ATI card under Vista. However, it seems a little buggy to me. I pretty much never use it though, since I have SageTV Client on the same machine.

I believe Placeshifter uses overlay.

I think Placeshifter uses OpenGL when you turn on 3D acceleration. It doesn't knock me out of Aero when I turn it on.

It needs something with working OpenGL in the drivers for 3d accelleration to work, otherwise it uses Overlay - which is incompatible with Aero, as you have seen.

The Radion Mobility X1600 drivers that came with my Asus laptop did not work, but with the help of mobmodder i was able to install some updated drivers which allows it to work in 3d mode -- try Dells or intel's site (which appears to be broken at the moment) for more recent drivers (Laptop manufactures are very slow at updating their drivers)
