Placeshifter and College

My daughter just started College and I was hoping she would be able to use the Placeshifter to watch her shows at school.

The Placeshifter login screen says the locator found my server, but it will not connect. Just sits trying to connect to my IP. I had her try to login to the Sage Webserver and it will connect, and she can watch shows.

I am not real network knowledgeable so I am curious as to why the webserver would work, but the Placeshifter won't?? I am guessing it has something to do with the school blocking something the Placeshifter needs but since the webserver works I wonder what I may need to change..

Thanks...

The school MIGHT be blocking it, but that is rather unlikely. Have you successfully used Placeshifter from outside your network before? IT may just be your router/firewall blocking the SageTV Placeshifter port.

Then it sounds like they may be blocking it (sad, really). You have a couple options though. You might be able to change the port Placeshifter uses to a 'standard' port (8080 perhaps?) that the school would allow, or you may be able to set up a VPN that she can connect to, and tunnel the connection through that. Details on how to do these things I do not have, as I've never tried either, but either should work to get around the schools dictatorship.

Interesting.. The webserver is using port 8080 and it works.. Guess I should take a look in the manual and see how to change the port...

Thanks..

As a former edu netadmin you might have her ask the support folks if they are willing to help her out with it? She should be able to describe the port she is trying to use, what she is using it for and see what they can do for her.

Heck if nothing else drop me a PM with the school she's going to I might be able to give you a good contact for it, though I can't promise anything

You could try setting up a Hamachi network (free, private VPN) by logmein. Although, they might block the ports that uses as well, but they might be configurable.
