HD-PVR H264 DXVA and ATI Cards

I am posting this in hopes that it helps some of you get DXVA working with your ATI cards and HD-PVR H264 files with the ArcSoft decoder.

I recently added a HD-PVR to my system. I was using the current ATI catalyst 8.x drivers, and was unable to get DXVA working with any combination of Overlay, VMR9, FSE in Windows XP with the ArcSoft decoder. I had enabled DXVA in the ArcSoft decoder from graphedit. I then used driver clean pro to uninstall my current ATI driver, and installed the driver that came with my card. I think it was 6.10? Instant DXVA in both Overlay and VMR9.

Without DXVA my H264 files were a smeary mess. You could really see it on the scroll on ESPN during SportsCenter. With DXVA I have close to perfect playback-- a hiccup every now and then but nothing major, and everything is razor sharp. This is on a Core2Duo E6600 with an ATI 2600pro.

Bottom line, if you are having problems, try an earlier ATI driver.

I hope this helps some of you out.

Does DXVA = hardware accel. = big drop in CPU usage?

I just bought a Sapphire 3650 and get the same smeary mess on my HD-PVR video with the latest drivers and with the CD drivers even though CPU dropped from 60% (onboard video) to 3% (3650).

I'll try to find an older driver to load an see if that makes any difference.

Well, I tried to load earlier drivers. 7.12 still has the video smearing problem and anything earlier will not install saying that there is no compatible HW.

Hmm... are you using the ArcSoft decoder? I will try and post the exact driver version I am currently running for you.

What video card are you using? I have an HD 2400 Pro PCIe, but I also have an older x1950xt AGP that I could fish out, but obviously that would be a LOT of work consider I would need to swap motherboards. BLECH!!!
