WMCCDS.exe Does Sage use this??
I am running Sage on a Windows Home Server machine. It is running 6.3.10. Seems like randomly I will get pausing, stuttering, etc on my MVP's. When I look at the server to see what it is doing I find a process called WMCCDS.exe using up almost all my cpu.
From what I have read it is used to allow an XBox to communicate with a server. I don't have an XBox. Does Sage need this process for anything? I have gone to services and disabled it with no bad effects noticed but would like to know if it is necessary, and if so for what.. |

That is the Windows Media Connect service. It implements the UPnP sharing of your media files so that UPnP renderer devices like the XBox, or a Roku player can render (play) the media on your WHS.

I don't have an XBOX, Roku, or anything like that on my network so I am curious as to why it is running at all. I get a warning in WHS now that I have disabled the service that tells me that it is not running. I disabled it because it uses a lot of cpu power when running. I just can't figure out why it is running when I don't have anything that should be using it...
Seems to have started doing this about the time I installed the WHS Powerpack 1 update... Strange.... |

If you have media sharing turned on on your WHS it is doing the work involved in sharing the media regardless of whether a renderer on the other end is playing it. Usually, WMCCDS.EXE runs up the CPU utilization when you boot up the server as it catalogs the media folders. If you have a lot music, photos, or videos in the shared media folders this can take quite a while. Once the catalog has been rebuild WMCCDS.EXE should settle down and use minimal CPU.
If you do not want to share media from WHS then just go into the Media Sharing tab under Settings on the WHS console and turn it off. |

I disabled Windows Media Sharing in the Console, and put the service back to auto. I think I understand what it does, maybe.. I don't need to have it enabled using Sage, but would need it for an XBox or something like that.. Thanks for the help. It is all clear as mud now..... ![]() |
