Upgrade SageTV beta on Debian
I saw that there were instructions to upgrade a CentOS server to a newer version of SageTV and was curious if the same steps applied to a Debian install using the Debian packages (not the .tar.gz).
I'm running the 6.4.3 beta and wanted to upgrade to the 6.4.4 beta (wanted to upgrade the HD Extender as well). Do I just backup everything and run dpkg? Are there any files I would need to restore? Thanks for any information.

You shouldn't need to restore anything if you don't want to go back, once the new version is running it will upgrade the files to the new version. It is still a good idea to do a backup of the wiz.bin file once in a while though if you want to keep the database in case something happened to the filesystem.

I wrote the instructions for CentOS.
The only reason they are written the way they are is because I wanted to keep the data files and configuration files away from the SageTV installation directory. I keep them on my "data" drive which gets backed up regularly. I also like to have multiple versions of Sage installed at the same time, so that in case the new version doesn't work I can just change symlink to point it to the previous version. I solved it by storing these files on my data drive and then using symlinks to link them to the installation directory. There are several files that cannot be treated this way mainly because sage renames them and then recreates them. These files needs to be manually backed up and then restored to the new installation directory. If you keep reinstalling sage in the same directory then of course you don't need to do that since they will be already there. I sent Sage suggestion how to improve their compatibility with Linux mainly by storing their configuration files in aone subdirectory of the installation directory and the data files in other. That way you can just place them in the standard locations (/etc and /var) and symlink these directories from the Sage installation directory. Hopefully it will happen one day. |
