"Buffer" is misleading here. There's no difference between recording files made for live TV and those made for favorites or other scheduled recordings. If you watch a scheduled recording live (while it's still recording), Sage doesn't make a separate buffer file for the live stream. If you're watching unscheduled live TV, and you hit the Record button, all that happens is that the autodelete flag is removed from the file. The file itself stays where it is in the recordings directory.

With regard to fragmentation, there's no difference between auto-deletion of live TV files and auto-deletion of favorites that have the auto-delete property enabled. Even if you never watch live TV and do all your deletion manually (as I do), you're still going to get fragmentation if you have more than one tuner and record more than one program simultaneously. The key is to format your recording drive in 64K clusters so that fragmentation won't matter. (And of course you can still schedule defragmentations in the dead of night to keep things cleaned up if you like.)
