Blue screen - Thread stuck in device driver

Hey guys,

My Sagetv has been running fairly smoothly for 8 months now. I haven't changed a thing. I do not have auto updates on either.

Lately, certain recorded shows will crash the system during playback. I can recreate the problem at will with specific shows. I understand that he "Thread stuck in device driver" issue is 99.9% of the time a video driver issue. Again, I haven't changed a thing up until the point this started occuring. I did upgrade the vid driver after the issue started and got the same crash.

Issue occurs in Sagetv as well as WMP. Memtest completed with no errors, and system passes nvidia stress test.

Any ideas? Could it be something specific to the shows? Is that a utility out there that can examine the mpg files in question and tell me if they're damaged in some way?

James

Wow 70 reads and no response....ok.

Well, MS debugging tools used to analyze the minidumps. analysis indicates that the issue is "probably caused" by the nv4_mini.sys driver file for my Nvida 7950 GS cards.

As noted above, I did try updating the drivers, and verified that the size and version of the nv4_mini.sys file changed.

Maybe I should look for an older driver from Nvidia's site.

Anyone have anything similar to this?

btw...chkdsk's performed with no major issues, registry cleaners used with some issues identified and corrected, all AV and FW software removed.

I would check inside the computer for a fan that has failed. In my experience when things used to be running fine and then all of a sudden start having problems...it's a heat problem. Perhaps the video card fan, power supply fan or an exhaust fan?

I agree that if there have been no software changes, then it's mostly a hardware failure. Aside from checking fans as suggested above, make sure your graphics card is seated properly in its slot and that its power connector is securely seated as well. If you can't narrow down the cause, a $15-$20 power-supply tester might be a good investment.

Removed Nvidia 7950 GS card, and bought an ATI HD 2400 Pro 256 PCIe.

Problem resolved....however, I am wondering if the 2400 Pro is the best card for the money...I paid $99.00 at walmart b/c I was in a crunch....Should I take it back and get the Nvidia 8600 GTS?

I watch Broadcast HD alot
