cannot enforce recording qualities on HVR-1800

On the analog input on my HVR-1800 I cannot set the recording quality correctly. No matter what setting I choose it will not record above 5 mbps. It will record at bitrates below that but nothing above. I also tried a custom quality setting in the sage properties, but no luck. I have sage 6.3.10 and the 3.4D1 hauppage drivers. If anyone has any ideas, they would be appreciated. Thanks

Is it possible that is the max for that card?

The documentation says that 12mbps is the maximum which is the maximum for the PVR series cards too.

But it's analog. Why would you want to record it at such a high bitrate? It can only make a picture look so good. You'll reach a point of diminishing returns. I record at DVD standard about 3 MB and don't see much difference between that and 5. Certaininly not enough to require twice as much disk space to record.
