Why Gentoo?

Does anyone know why the Sage TV Developers choose the Gentoo distribution over all the other Linux distos available?

Why not?

Only they would know. But there has been a lot of talented users that have installed it and documented some of the installs on other Linix distros.

SageTV is providing Debian installers now as well as tarballs. Ubuntu and other Debian based distros should be able to take advantage of these quite easily.

I was asking because I was wondering if there was an advantage to using gentoo over the other distros or not.

Gentoo is "better" if you don't mind compiling your code because you can tweak settings to optimize binaries.

The problem that I have had with gentoo.... is keeeping it up to date. I used to run gentoo on both my server and desktop, but if I went a month or two without doing an emerge, then I had issues.

If you are setting up a "stable" server for running sage, then you might want to consider a Ubuntu distro with LTS. Hardy (8.04, due this month) will have LTS, so it may be a good choice as a stable server platform. I currently run Sage on 7.10 and I haven't had any issues, so I'm not sure if I'll upgrade to 8.04 when it ships or not

my 2 cents.

I used to be a die hard gentoo user, however it doesn't have the upkeep it used to, its floundering. I built my system on an ubuntu server edition setup.
