How to use license keys
I've ordered the sageTV server package when I order my HD100. I received an email with the SageTV License Key and SageTV Media Extender License Key. For using the HD100, I only needed to enter the SageTV license key. However, I also want to be able to use my laptop with it - to allow for configuring and playing around with sage. I went ahead and entered the media extender key, per the manual, but when I start up the sage client on my laptop, it also asks for a key. I've tried entering the extender key there too, but it isn't working. What is the correct way to do it?
Thanks, John |

The client requires a different key which you did not purchase. You can use the Placeshifter on the client with the key that you have. But if you only have 1 extender key, you can either use the HD extender or the PS at a time.

When installing on WHS you get a free Placeshifter/ Media Extender license with it. So with your order you will basically have two extender keys you can use since you are installing on WHS. So it seems that the HD100 is using one extender - so shouldn't I have another somewhere? Thanks, John |

I think the free license he referred to is built into Sage. So you could use the HD extender and use PS on the server with no problem. But if you want to use PS on a client and use the HD extender at the same time, you will need 2 extender licenses. The license program will show how many keys you have installed. You should also get a message if you try to use PS or HD extender without a license being available.

I thought the media extender/placeshifter was referring to another machine used to access the server. What is the difference between a client and a placeshifter/extender?

So a placeshifter would basically do what client does without the DVD playback, which is fine for me - I just want to play with the server remotely. So I guess I need to uninstall the client and download the placeshifter?

That is mostly correct, but I think there are a few more minor differences. I think you can use both for a 21 day trial period before you have to decide. I recall seeing a problem where the PS could play music that the client could not. If when you say remotely and mean over the internet then the PS is what you want.

Not really remotely, on the network in my house. I wanted to be able to manage the sage system w/o having to use the HD100, since it is hooked to the TV everyone watches. Also, the WHS box is headless.

I use homeserver and bought one extra placeshifter licens. That was a mistake because the WHS version includes on placeshifterlicens that can be used on all computers around the house, not simultaniusly though.
You should be good to go withe the licenses that are bundled when you purchase WHS version and the extender. 1 server license 1 placeshifter license included in the above 1 placeshifter licens included with the HD extender. (now you can watch the interface on the extender and on one of your computers, OR use the placeshifter on two computers but not on the extender, As soon as you disconnect on of the computers, the extender should be able to connect to the server again) |
