Fast Forward like TiVo ?

Am I correct that the only provision to FF with Sage is the "skip forward" method ?

I've been looking through the manual hoping I was missing something, I'd like to be able to FF in Sage like you can in TiVo and then when you hit play, it automatically backs up 8 seconds or so.

Thanks

The new HD Extenders have 3 methods of FF/REW...default 3 settings are smooth, 10sec, 2min (or something like that...you can configure the durations).

On a regular client there are only 2 configurable skip settings. I know the SageMC STV allows for smooth on DVD's...not sure if the default STV does or not.

I am an ex-TiVo guy as well, and in the beginning I was going crazy without smooth FF/REW. I later realized that it is typically a lot less intensive (waiting for just the right moment to click stop) to just skip forward over most of the commercials and casually click the 10s button a few times to get where you need to be.

Get your commercial-skip add-ons going, and forget about it. You won't care that you don't have smooth scrolling. I got over it well before I even installed the commercial skipping stuff, and honestly never thought I would. Now that I have an extender, it's just a bonus...and I really still don't use it. <grin>

It isn't an overnight thing, but it definitely does happen! Sage does so much more than a TiVo it turned out to be a small thing for me in the long run...

HOpe this helps, and good luck!

No that isn't correct. You can install Multi-Speed Continuous FF/RW if you use the default STV. This plugin gives you the smooth (Tivo-like) fast-forward and rewind you are looking for and can be installed on your SageTV server, client etc.

Alternatively if you use SageMC, it's built in.

BTW: The end of Chapter 5 in the PDF manual lists all the various commands, including all the FF styles. The built-in Smooth FF/REW commands, as it says, can be used on an extender for video playback, or for DVD playback on a PC when using some DVD decoders.

Thanks Brent ! That's just what I was hoping for. I'll try that.

Andy, thanks, I read that. I'm not using extender.

Thanks for all the info

I hope this is appropriate here. As a user of SageTV 9 I find that installing the
'Multispeed Skip' plugin does exactly what is wanted and works very well.

There is also something called Dynamic Skip Times which lets you set the Skip or Skip2 by Show Title. This is invaluable for me as commercial breaks in some sports are 120 seconds, in others they are 150 seconds. It also useful if you have to get to the end of an 8 hour show as you can set it up to be something like 1800 seconds so that you can skip 30 minutes at a time.
