TIVO Like Fast Forward

I don't know if this has been posted anywhere else but I was wondering why there is no TIVO (or BeyondTV) like fast forward. For those of you who dont' know what I mean, its where you push a fast forward button once and it plays faster (2x or 4x), you push it again and it gets faster. There's usually three gradients of this. I kind of like this method better for skipping through commercials since you can see when the show comes on. Usually, these players also have an "intelligence" where it accounts for user response so that when you push play, it rewinds back to where it would have been .5 seconds ago.

So, sage actually has the play faster button which is essentially the same thing but as far as I can tell, that doesn't have a setting in setup or the sage.properties file where you can change the speed of this (right?). Its actually kind of slow.

Anyway, just wondering if ppl like the set frame fast forward as opposed to the "scrolling." At the very least, maybe someone could tell me how to customize the built in "play faster" button.

Thanks

If you do some searching, you'll find that this has been discussed many times in the past -- it tends to come up fairly frequently. Many people want the option to have smooth fast forwarding, but SageTV does not currently have that. (I like the jump forward, but I know others want the choice.)

I do not know if there is a way to change the play faster speed. But, you can change the FF and FF2 jump times to suit your preferences, and there is a nother type of jump, time scroll mode, that you can adjust also.

Could you please explain how this is done? This is just what I've been searching the forums for. Thank you!

you can change the ff and ff2 times in the sage.properties file, which is located in the C:\program files\frey technologies\SageTV folder.

If you edit this file in notepad, you can change the two settings under:

videoframe/ff_time=10000
videoframe/ff_time2=165000

Those are my settings now but its in milliseconds so I'm at 10 and 2:45.

There are corresponding rewind times listed there as well.

If anybody knows where to change the "play faster" settings, I'd still be interested in that.

There is also time scroll mode. Use the Time scroll command to enter the mode, FF/REW to move, and timescroll to exit the mode & start playing where you moved to. While in time scroll mode, FF2/REW2 jump to the end/beginning of the recording. See SageTV Configuration Properties & look for:

ui/time_scroll_amount=

The play faster/slower commands are seldom mentioned around here. I won't say there is no way to configure them, but it will be news to me.

i can't recall the name of the command, but if you just browse (via the sage gui) the key commands, there is a command for 'play faster' as mentioned in earlier posts. however, for me, i can not get the darn thing to play faster.

i believe there's also a play-faster-in-reverse command but i'm not totally sure. i figured that using 'play faster' would resemble traditional fast forward. but, at least for me, it doesn't.

if anyone figures it out, please let us know. thanks-

I think that command is intended only for DVDs:

As for smooth FFW and RW, it is very hard to do.

hmm i forgot about this thread but discovered it today while searching for a way to get PLAY FASTER to work. for me, it works neither with DVD's nor sage-recorded mpegs. has anyone gotten this to work? i know that you can't adjust the speed with which sage PLAYS FASTER. i just can't seem to get it to function at all...

and let me request smooth FF- i miss powerdvd which had that feature. it makes scrolling through a scene so much nicer, imo.
thanks,
fodder

I personally dont understand why this option cant be looked into. It seems like a popularly sought ought feature and it must be doable since competitors like beyondtv do it well. I feel like the three speed ffw or rww just seems so much smoother.

If it would be news to you Opus, then I guess its not possible. I wonder why this command is not configuratble when all te others are? I would really like to make 'play slower' slower.
