Help - Keep getting error message "failed to connect to IP Address via DHCP"

Setup:
Athlon 5000+ with 3gb Ram, Hauppauge PVR-1800 tuner, SageTV media extender, netgear WGT 624 wireless G router (working - several computers and printer) and Windows Vista Premium

Have tried:
Restarting all components (routers, computers, extender)
Disabling all firewalls AND making exceptions for recommended ports
Changed port to recommended for placeshifter (which resulted in successful test of placeshifter function - but extender still doesn't find network server)
Experimented with both DHCP and static settings on extender.
Even experimented with the registry settings one forum writer suggested, but to no avail, and I'm not sure I did it correctly.

I'm very frustrated. I don't mind spending some time getting things to work, but this seems like way too much time and effort..

I feel like I've read all the posts that could be relevant.

Could someone please assist??

You need to be more specific about which extender you have and even what your issue is. I will assume you are referring to the HD extender (not MVP extender) and that it is the extender that is displaying the message.
Has it ever worked or is this the first time you have tried to use it? Has any of your devices needed a DHCP server before? Do you know what device is providing the DHCP server, probably the router or Vista? If you set the HD extender to use a static address then you should not see any message about DHCP.

Is the extender directly wired to this?

Can you check the wire with a laptop or? ?

Thank-you for your willingness to help - here are some clarifications

I'm using the HD Extender - the STX-HD100 (sorry for not making this clear).

The extender is displaying the error message.

I don't believe any of my devices has needed the DHCP server previously.

I believe the router is providing the DHCP server.

I'm trying to connect wirelessly.

If I try using the static address - I'm not sure what numbers to enter. I've tried a variety of combinations. My router appears to use:
IP: 75.70.52.210
Subnet Mask: 255.255.252.0
Gateway: 75.75.52.1
DHCP: 68.87.66.10
DNS 68.87.85.98 or 68.87.69.146
When I enter these numbers, it still doesn't find a server.

This is my first time using (or attempting to use) SageTV and the extender.

Thanks in advance for any input you can provide.

John

The HD media extender is not a wireless device.

Yes, that would be your first major problem. Get the Hd extender wired to your network.
Open a dos window under vista and enter the following command:
arp -a

The first line output should be interface: x.x.x, report back with what that IP address is.

I'd wager its his only problem, unless there's a firewall between the STX and the router he should be good to go just by plugging it in and setting the network to DHCP

OH!!!!

Wow. I'm not even sure what to say. I could have tried all week to get it connected wirelessly. Would I have been able to make it a wireless device by wishing really hard that it would wirelessly connect? Wow.

Thanks for clearing that up. I'll try it wired and see what I can do.

I don't suppose there is currently any way to make it wireless?

Are the advantages of SageTV's UI and other abilities worth using this system, or would I have been equally well served by buying a wireless HD extender?

Anyhow - I feel a bit like an idiot - but thank-you all for your help. I would have been banging my head against a wall for a while!!

Don't worry about it, we've all been there

They don't make a wireless HDextender, but you can purchase a wireless bridge to turn it into a wireless HDextender. Check out this thread on the topic...
