Harmony remote, multiple codes for buttons

How is it that the Harmony 550 has multiple codes for a single button press? When I setup a Hauppauge PVR-550 and try to configure the Left button (for example) I see two different codes appear. I noticed this because after configuring it I found that it only worked about 1/2 the time. I checked and it produces two unique codes. So I programmed them both. Then sometimes, most of the time, it would move 2x to the left. I removed one code and it still went to the left 2x or not at all. Why would there be two codes? I'm using a USB-UIRT to capture the signals.

To get around this I took another remote that I had been using that worked fine and reprogrammed the Harmony so the Left/Right/etc. keys produced the same codes as the other remote. That worked for some keys but others didn't seem to remember the codes I'd programmed & reverted back to the dual codes. One key did remember the new code but retained the other two codes so it would produce 3 unique codes. The whole thing makes what seemed to be a really easy experience much more difficult. |

The IR protocol used by Hauppauge remotes uses a toggle code, so when you press the same button repeatedly w/o pressing a different button in between, it alternates between 2 different codes. The Hauppauge IR software easily sees the toggle and uses it to help distinguish between press-and-hold vs multiple presses of the same button.

And, yes, to use that kind of a remote with the USB-UIRT, you will need to learn both versions of each button. - Andy

Thanks, that makes sense. I still don't understand why a single press will make some keys (arrow keys mainly) act as if the button was pressed twice 100% of the time.
