Can I leave my tv on like I leave my pc monitor on?

I just bought a new LCD TV and was wondering if leaving the tv on, and having the computer "turn monitor off", would hurt the tv? This is what I do with my LCD monitor for my computer and both the tv and monitor are lcd flat panels.

thanks

Does the TV actually turn off if you have it set up like that?

It shouldn't hurt it, but I don't know if "TV"s , support the power on/off commands like monitors do.

See, that's what I'm not sure of. When the computer turns the tv off the blue led on the front turns orange and the screen goes completely black just as my lcd monitor does. The tv also has a power save feature built into it that looks like it turns the tv off, but I'm not sure because I can hit a button on the tv remote and the screen comes back up. I cannot turn the screen back like that with the pc remote that I have. I think that it turns the tv off, but I just want to make sure. It is hooked up through vga too.

It seems resonable that the remote would be able to wake the tv up. After all, how would you feel if you needed to wake the pc up to be able to view something on the tv from another source?

What does the manual say?

Mick.

Well, I know it's reasonable for the tv to come up when a button on the tv remote is pushed I just am not sure whether the tv actually goes completely off or if it is just saving power and is still on. I guessing the light goes off and that is probably all I need, right?

I am in the process of moving and cannot seem to find the manual and all of the manuals on the internet are not the same manuals for my tv.

I would say set the computer to turn the display off after one minute of inactivity and see if it works. The sleep signal from the computer probably will only work on the computer input though, not the TV tuner since IIRC, VCRs, STBs, & DVD players don't send a "sleep" command to the display.

If the TV is "Energy Star" rated, the power consumption when the TV is in sleep or standby mode is required to be less than 15 watts. The IR circuity and the constantly powerered circuits in the device (clock, channel memory, IR detection circuits, Instant-on circuits, etc) still draw power from the wall outlet. That is why all equipment manufacturers recommend you unplug them from the wall when you go on a vacation.

If you turn off the room lights at night and you can still see a light on the device, it is drawing power

Do you have a power monitoring device like a wattsUp or KillaWatt?? You can plug the Tv into it and see how much current is used while the TV is on and in standby.

I would assume you are fine, as long as it does go to and return from standy as you discribe. Waking the TV with it's remote I seriously doubt will wake the connected PC. A PC remote on the other hand should wake both.

The easiest solution is probably to look in through the vent holes in the the top/sides in back of the tv. If the TV is actually going off and not to just a solid black screen due to the lack of input, the backlight tubes will turn off. If you can see a fluorescent like glow, the tv is still on, if not, it's most likely off.

You should probably make sure you can see the glow when you know the tv is on, I know I can with mine.

Ok, well I did everything suggested. I set the sleep timer to 1 min and when the screen goes black all the lights that I could see through the vents goes off and when I turn the ceiling light off the room is completely black. I guess I'll be fine with letting the computer turn it off.

This is just something you need to know I guess, and I am very careful with my electronics.

Thanks to all the replies.

Even if the TV supports this feature, as it seems some do, can this be accomplished with the STX extender?

That is, turn off the EXTENDER ONLY, and the TV should go to sleep. Does that seem likely, or can it be confirmed?

I don't think so, it appears (with HDMI) that the extender leaves the output active.

If I had to guess, with HDMI it is required to leave the output active, because the HDMI is designed to carry the IR data to other devices. So if the HDMI were go "turn off" the IR data that may request the connected device to do something wouldn't get passed.

Just a guess of course.
