Hangs at service initializing-Locator Error

I'm trying troubleshooting my parent's system that has worked fine for a couple of years, and all of a sudden now it won't get past service initialization. Here's the error from the error log:

ERROR updating locator system of:java.net.SocketException: Permission denied: connect

They have an HD extender. Could it be an issue with that? Is the locator what goes out on the network to look for servers or something?

Any ideas? I uninstalled all the old versions of Java and installed the latest one. That didn't help. Also tried to shutdown zone alarm and that didn't work either.

I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks,
flips

The locator is for remote placeshifter connections where the server has a dynamic IP. It's similar to dynamic DNS, you should probably look at any new anti-virus / anti-malware thats been recently installed or updated. You should probably take this to support as it's not a common trouble for users.

The Windows firewall may be active too, though I don't know why it would hang if there was a port issue. You could check this FAQ about firewall ports.

But, yes, you may be better off checking with SageTV support if that isn't it -- that error may not be what is causing it to stop.

Just to close this in case someone else has the same issue, it was a firewall / malware detector issue. Thanks guys.

Windows One Care was installed, which turned on the firewall. It also has a built in malware detector, but I think it was the firewall which was causing the issue.
