Help - install results in errors - I'm stuck

So, as promised a couple weeks back, when I asked if Sage would work in Canada, I would dump BTV for a while and try Sage for a couple of weeks. Well I can't get past the install ...

When I get to the Source Wizard and select new source, the menu display's 2 options:

Hauppauge wintv 418 video capture >>> S-Video
Hauppauge wintv 418 TS capture >>> Digital TV

When I select the 418 video capture, it begins to test for video and then dumps me an error:
There was a playback error in playback
details: sage.playbackexception:error(-4,0x80040217): there was a problem rendering the video of the content for playback

If I select the 418 TS capture, I have to wait a long time ~ 90 seconds, the display fills multiple menu's stacked on top of each other ... screen goes nuts

Ok, so what have I done wrong other than click setup ?

My stuff:
EVGA mATX AMD / 1 gig ram / Raid 500g / 6600GT DVI > HDMI > HDTV
XP OS is virgin with only current SP installed [very stable]
NVidia chipset & GPU software drivers / tools
Hauppauge 1600 with IR blaster / software installed
Satellite <--> Hauppauge are connected via S-Video

Oh and Media Player Classic installed for soft media file playback

Cheers

A few seconds ago I just started a thread about menus stacked on top of each other, making the setup menus completely unreadable. Then I just noticed your post. Hope you find a solution.

Often, this means you should try other decoder and/or renderer settings in Detailed Setup -> Video/Audio. Give that a shot & see what happens. I think I've also seen comments about updating video card drivers and/or DirectX.

Andy - thanks for the suggestion, however I'm struggling with when I would change the decoder considering I'm in the middle of the installation. If the install won't bind the Sage software to the Hauppauge card, I'm not even close to playing with "other" settings.

The video drivers are the latest from nVidia ... Although BTV has flaws, they is no video rendering issues with the current drivers.

Cheers

Hmmm... maybe skip the tuner setup for now & finish the rest of the configuration wizard. You can easily get back to tuner setup later via Main Menu -> Setup -> Setup Video Sources.

Or, you could probably ignore the playback error for the analog TV source setup on the 1600 & finish setting up that one.

I'm not sure why trying to use the digital side of the tuner would mess up the menus, since it sounds like they were working OK before that point.

On my thread Calgar gave me the answer. He said to change all the lines with "animation" in it from "true" to false in the Properties file. That cleared up the menus, making them readable (no more overlap and garbled menu options) so now I can get through setup.

Yes, I saw that & it can't really hurt to try that here too, but in this topic there is a playback error, which you don't have, and the menus worked up to the point that the using the digital tuner was attempted. It sounded like your menus didn't work at all right from the start.

Success

I have no idea what I did ... after my 87th attempt to install Sage, the PC locked up solid ... I mean rock hard.

Reset button and this time it worked, although I had rebooted a number of times previously.

Just in case an actual Sage person reads this ... I wish to be clear on the problems I encountered aside from the Hauppauge error in my opening question. During the installation overlapping and garbled menus were very common which made it extremely difficult to navigate through the initial installation settings menus.

But the good news is it's installed, I can play for a couple of weeks...
First impressions [besides the install] wow, what a difference from BTV.

The real test will be if the better half can figure her way around

One little feature that is probably so obvious I can't see it ... if I want to record the same program every week night [assuming it's on, so I would be using the guide], how would I record all new episodes automatically when selecting a program from the guide ?

I guess I'm use to BTV and my old Tivo ... do you wish to record this program every night option ??

Cheers
Thanks for the assist

Glad to hear it is working. (Though, I'm not really sure what was happening if it suddenly started working.)

In SageTV, these are called Favorites -- select the show in the Guide, choose Record Options, then Add this show as a Favorite.

Since you are new to SageTV, you may want to check out the PDF manual in your SageTV dir -- or, on Windows, via Setup -> Help -> View SageTV PDF Manual.

I suggest you at least check out chapter 2's Quick Start Guide, around p. 18.

Chapter 3 explains most of the menus & things are interlinked from one manual page to another.
