Please make a Front Row or Appletv appearing program?

Hey guys,
I am almost on the verge of switching completely over to my appletv and my tivo. I know.. I never wanted to say this, but I am. Things work, they work great, and the album art and interface are amazing. Can someone please, please prevent me from doing this, and make a nice menu system like appletv. The other programs such as isage etc, leave a little to be desired. I am on the verge of converting all my files to itunes compatible files, and I will forever be lost from sagetv. I don't want this.

Just a heads up before everyone else responds.

You're going to need to be more specific. What is it about that interface you like? What are you able to see/do/love on the AppleTV you can't in Sage?

Specifics are much more likely to be implemented than broad statements.

I'm sad to say SageTV Studio does not feature a "Make it better" button. Though I heard a rumor one is in development.

Sounds like they're trying to license Staples' "Easy Button" technology.

Actually, it kind of reminds me of Singer's new Star Trek-licensed sewing machine, which has a "Make it sew" button.

(OK, groaning may now commence...)

New Apple TV allows on demand rentals of movies.. Perhaps, thanks to Nielm's webserver it can also do a podcast of a previously recorded show..

I know AppleTV has a slick interface like most things Apple. One item in particular is the way they display cover art for songs and videos in sort of a stack arrangement that you can flip through (also similar to Vista's Flip 3-D).

I do wish Studio would have some more graphic manipulation functions to make some of that sort of thing possible (or at least easier). For instance, the ability to rotate an image or text to various angles. Or to create a 3-D effect by adding perspective (making one side of an image taller or shorter than the other). Or to create a reflection effect. Perhaps these sorts of tricks can be done with native Java calls - I just don't know enough Java myself. You would want to be able to do this type of rendering on the fly and not create them in advance with some other graphics manipulation program.

One thing the original poster should remember about AppleTV is that it has no DVR capability (at least not the original version - maybe the next release will). It can only play songs and movies that are already on your hard drive or that you download from the Apple Store. It cannot display a program guide, schedule recordings, or make use of your tuner cards.

As for downloading Video Rentals from the Apple iTunes Store or Netflix or something similar, it would be nice, but I don't think that will happen soon. The reason is DRM. Any paid content would require a secure way to make payments or at least to authenticate the user as someone with a paid subscription. It would also require a player that would honor and enforce the DRM protections. Sage would need to negotiate with Netflix or whoever and then develop a secure payment/download/playback mechanism, and then the DRM restrictions would likely prohibit playback over an extender, placeshifter, or other client.

Right now, even TV content from ABC.com, NBC.com, CBS.com, etc. can't be incorporated into Sage, since they all require you to use their proprietary web-based players. In this case, the motivation is to make sure you can't skip the commercials.

i would go for a version of placeshifter to run on the AppleTV - no need to worry about the DRM issues then.
