Which Comcast box for the R5000?

Hi,

I'm finally ready to go grab an HDTV and upgrade my cable package with Comcast, but only if I can get an R5000 mod on the box.

Anyone know specific box models I should ask for that are compatible with the mod? I know a while back I kept reading around here about a box you can buy from Amazon that Comcast will provision for you, but that thing is so ugly (and enormous) it's not an option for me.

The r5000 site doesn't list any specific box models, but I have a friend who sells for Comcast so I can probably get from him whatever I need to make this work.

Thanks.

None of the MOT boxes are exactly, shall we say, svelt... I would recommend the dct5100. No 1394, so nextcomm will mod it, but it is a native hd box, which should avoid any issues with hd provisioning.

thx
mike

Nice to know. I'll see if I can get one of those. That's where the Nextcomm site wasn't very helpful, suggesting an SD box with an external HD decoder. Thanks.

EDIT: Should it be a concern that the PDF manual here shows a 1394 connection on the back?

The DCT5100's that most of the MSO's fielded had no 1394 in them. This was the main HD box before the FCC forced everyone to add 1394 interfaces. Another user here, mkanet, had two of these modified with no problems.

Welcome to the world of DRM free premium HDTV!

thx
mike

So, does this mean than even DCT5100s with 1394 can be modded, or just that there are a lot of them w/o 1394 and I need to make sure I get one of those?

a 1394'd DCT5100 probably could be modded, but nextcom is not willing to do so, due to possible DRM issues.

yup, you would need to find one without a firewire port if you want nextcom to mod it for you.
