Exception in server log

Hello,

I am currently evaluating the SageTV in order to decide if I should replace my trial Windows version with the full Windows or the Linux version. I would like to go with Linux but since there is no trial I am trying to at least set up the the downloaded version and see if I encounter any problem before I make the purchase. I am trying it on CentOS 5.1.

I have downloaded the 6.3.5 Linux tarball, unpacked and run. I have run the placeshifter both on Windows and on Linux. The placeshifter detects the running server and tries to connect. I see the blue window come up, saying it is connecting to the server but then it disappears. In the placeshifter output I see that it got SocketExceptionL Socket closed. In the server log I see some NullPointerExceptions. Is this a normal behaviour for unlicensed version? How far should I be able to get before the licensing stops me? I do not want to pay money for something which will not work or will not allow me to play all what I want to play, but at the same time I would love to run on Linux if I have the chance.

I am attaching the server log to see if anybody can figure out if there is something wrong with the server.

Thank you.

Actually, on linux if you try to run it without the activation being done, it won't start. Take a look at the startsage script for further info. So if you are running it from the command line, without running the script, I would expect it to not work at all.

It does actually start as you can see from the log. I did look at the script and I just created a "fake" key (file with random text in it), which will allow it to start. So the server is running, the placeshifter detects it running, but then when placeshifter tries to connect, the server seems to throw an exception. I am not sure if this is because of the activation/key or because of my Linux setup.

Well, considering that the Linux version has no trial period, I would expect that "no trial period" means it won't work w/o an actual license. You seem to be running into that stop point.

Hmmm, I would expect an error message that my license key is invalid. What do I get instead is

You don't have a valid license key. It won't work. I can tell you from experience the software is smart enough.

I am not trying to make it work (get around the license), I am trying to see if I can get it setup up to the point that I am sure that it will work after I purchase the license (or if not then switch to Windows). As I mentioned, if I hit the point when the license is required, I would expect to see a user friendly error message that I need to have a valid license. What I get instead is exceptions in the log. I am actually a Java expert so I know my way around ;-) and this is a concern since it seems like there is something not right.

Can anybody tell me what should be the expected behaviour if I try to connect to unlicensed server?
