HD extender audio out question

Hello. I've just ordered the HD extender and I am planning my install. Does anyone know if the audio out levels (either RCA or via HDMI) are controlled by the remote?

Often on these kinds of devices the audio outs are just line level out and the remote has no control over the output volume. I am trying to decide if I need to use an amp with a remote controlled volume or if I can use a simple (set gain) two channel amp to drive a pair of speakers and control the volume with the extender's remote (my preference). I do not plan on using the optical out and I'm only functioning in stereo for now.

Thanks,

Scott

Here, I'll make you feel better with a follow-up question:

I will be routing through a receiver, and would prefer to control volume level there. Assuming that the HDMI and/or optical out is line-level and not adjustable, can the volume buttons on the remote control be re-programmed to my receiver's volume codes?
