A couple questions before taking the plunge

Well, I'm finally forced to abandon my DirecTivo. I've moved to a place where I can't put up a dish and I get free expanded (analog) cable. I have a nice, very quiet little p4-based ITX box ready to become a DVR/media center. I installed Ubuntu and tried to get Myth setup on it, but it was just too darned much trouble. Sage has always looked good to me, and I'm totally sold on the DVR aspects, but as a long-time user of J River Media Center I'm wondering about the following things...

1. Does the music playing module have any means for analyzing the volume levels for each music file and doing automatic volume compensation when playing a variety of songs in a playlist? (If not, is there any kind of workaround?)

2. Does the photo module support tagging for the image files?

I'm also wondering if this thing is going to become an expensive paperweight in 2009 (or 2012)? Any thoughts or comments on the future of home-brewed, PC-based DVRs?
