Sage and MP4 files
I hope someone can help me. I have heard that Sage will playback MP4 video files. How do you get it to do that. I can't even get it to show the MP4 files in the Imported Media list.

By MP4 you mean AVIs, or files with an .mp4 extension? I havent actually got any .mp4 files but have plenty of AVIs which import and play 100% fine.

I actually did mean MP4 files but they aren't specifically necessary. I was looking for a file format more compressed than Mpeg2 that Sage could play.

There is a line in the properties file that tells Sage what extensions to consider when scanning for media. I can't remember the property offhand, but seach for .avi and you will find it. Edit the properties file and add .mp4 to that property.
Next, install a codec that supports H.264. Many people claim CoreAVC is among the best. After that you should be good to go.

Karen, sage plays MP4s fine. You can compress your shows to MP4 using STV's built in compression but I found all the algorithms that shrink the show down substantially result in crap PQ.
I suggest Crunchie (google) - easy to configure & use, and free. quality is good. |

Okay, Iedited the properties files and now the videos appear in the Imported Media list. I installed the coreAVC codec but Sage still will not play the video. When I watch one I get no picture and an awful squealing sound through the speakers. Do I have to tell sage about the new codec?

Do you have the always_use_dshow [something like that] property set to "true"? I have the same problem when it's set to true. If I set it to false, then the h.264 video will play, but using Sage's internal decoder, not my dshow decoder. Unfortunately, the internal decoder isn't as good.
