Vista MMCSS slows down media playback over gb LAN

After figuring out how to enable ripped dvd playback from my SageTV Linux server, I noticed issues with file breaks. Reading a bit on the Samba listserv uncovered this Basically, disable the MMCSS service and remove it as a dependency for Windows Audio.

Check out this for a patch. Microsoft is working on a fix.

To me, it looks like the opposite is true actually; the LAN is slowed down BY media playback, not the other way around. Am I missing something here?

Saying the same thing. Media play back causes slowness in LAN which causes issues in play back over the LAN.

If you have Vista and are running it as a client, check it out.

This bit me HARD! Tuesday night. I added a WD 500 Gig "My Book" on Tuesday. I attached it to the Windows Home Server box, just didn't add it to the pool. Shared it out over the GigE LAN and added it as a recording directory to Sage. All the QAM HD recordings (and LiveTV) were unwatchable...it looked like a low/bad signal situation, from the cable company. After checking the signal on another TV directly connected, I knew it wasn't the signal. Then I remembered this post...thanks bc! After disabling MMCS, playback was back to normal.

The only negative to getting rid of CMSS is that if the processor becomes work audio will stutter which CMSS is supposed to prevent, except its freaking out under certain situations and no one caught it.

You're right, I've turned it back on. The external drive I bought was the cause of all sorts of havoc...it wasn't the network.
