RIP
It is with sadness that I annouce the passing of my xpro mpt-460P 460W PSU, at the youthful age of warranty + 1 month.
It passed away silently on Monday 13 August 2007 at 0919 hrs, leaving behind a weeks worth of unrecorded TV. Initial attempts at resuscitation on Friday 17th August, although promising, proved unsuccessful. The old faithful 600W noisy-to-hell PSU has been brought back out of retirement until further notice. After purchasing a variety of psu's claiming to be nearly silent over the past couple of years, I've found that none of them actually do what they say on the tin. Does anyone have any good recommendations for a nice quiet 400+W PSU? |

Its passing will be mourned. Just remember you are not to blame, its time had come. It is with the flying spagetti monster now.
I just take my standard power supplies and replace the fans with one of the sharkoon fans. Silent. Cool.

The Corsair PSU would be good, but might be overkill depending on your hardware.
Corsair power supplies are made by Seasonic. |

I'm using 4 Seasonic power supplies. I've never had a failure, and they last longer than I need them to. I've replaced one due to new connector standards but never due to hardware failure.
Seasonic makes the most energy efficient power supplies on the market as well. If you leave Sage systems on 24/7 you might actually save some money with one over time.

I used to have 2 Seasonic ss-330ft psu's, not too sure when I bought them but it was around 4 years ago I think.
One of them gave up the ghost when it wouldn't provide enough power to open the dvd writer drawer. The other one is sat in a cupboard. They were lovely and quiet when you switched the pc on, but as it warmed up they got loader and loader. I'm sure the new ones are a lot quieter and a lot beefier. I also bought an FSP300 fanless psu, but have never got it to work. I rma'd it and got a replacement but it was the same. I've only ever tried it on athlon socketA boards, might have to borrow an P4 from someone to test that, but being 300w i'd only use it on a basic lower power desktop system. The one in my main desktop pc is a hyper HPU-4M580, now that is pretty quiet, but definately not silent. I'll have to get a new psu soon, the hovercraft in the living room is driving me mad |

Luckily my server is in a closet where sound isn't an issue. My server sounds like a jet-engine.
But it's plenty cool. |

The only way I'll get a silent closet is to move house. This is an old victorian mid-terrace with no space to put anything anywhere.
I did think about building a new shed and moving everything to that but I think the burglars would have a field day. |
