Asus Commando Power Requirements?

I am planning on purchasing an Asus Commando mainboard. The mainboard has a 24 pin power connector. I have an older 20 pin power supply. My local computer store said that the Commando mainboard should work with my older 20 pin power supply.

Is there anyone that confirm if the Asus Commando mainboard will work with an older 20 pin power supply instead of a newer 24 pin power supply?

Double-check your power supply. Many 20-pin units have a separate 4-pin connector that can be plugged in alongside the 20-pin connector in 24-pin sockets.

There's also a 20-24 pin adapter just for that situation. They're around $6.00-$9.00. Your mainboard should work fine.

When I was at the store, I saw the Asus Commando mainboard. There is a 24-pin power connector on the board, and a separate 4-pin connector in a different area on the mainboard.

The technician plugged in a 4-pin power cable into the separate area, and the 20-pin part of the 24-pin power cable to the 24-pin connector on the mainboard (the 24-pin power cable split apart between 20-pin and 4-pin parts of the power cable).

The other thing to check is to make sure your old PSU can deliver the +5VSB current that the board requires. Requirements keep creeping up here as more and more onboard devices become standby-enabled (e.g. for wake-on-LAN, wake-on-USB, etc). So it's possible your older PSU might not meet current spec in this regard.

I have the commando with a 20 pin ps.

Works fine for a server board. I guess you need to figure out what you'll be running on it.

The tech at the store plugged in the 20-pin part of the 24-pin power supply connector into the Commando 24-pin power connector with the empty pins closest to the CPU. A second 4-pin power cable was connected to a different area on the Commando mainboard.

Not related to the OT, but I just had an issue with the Commando and the newest BIOS update. Now it doesn't like my Crucial Ballistix RAM. ASUS said I could RMA the board, Crucial is sending me a new set, but I think the "engineers" at ASUS borked it.

What is that firmware version?

I haven't made the new system purchase yet. I am still researching the CPU, getting closer to choosing a Q6600. There is a Q6600 G0 (SLACR) that is superior to the Q6600 B3 (SL9UM) revision.

1404 and 1302. I had 1001 on it, but 1302 had compelling updates. I have the machine running with 512MB 533 Mhz.. Sure is a far cry from the 2GB 1066..
